Van Ness Baucum Obituary
Services for Van Ness Baucum, age 83, of Sweetwater will be at 10a.m. Thursday, September 29, 2016 at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Mark Alexander and Rev. Ryan Streybeck officiating.
Interment will be at the Garden of Memories under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
Visitation will be from 5p.m to 7p.m Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at McCoy Funeral Home.
Baucum died on Monday, September 26, 2016 at his residence.
He was born on April 8, 1933 in Anson.
He married his first wife Patricia Ann Ely in December of 1954. She passed away on March 12, 1961. He married Neta Clare Milner on January 25, 1962 in Abilene.
Van came from Anson to Sweetwater when he was 6 months old. He was a graduate of Newman High School in 1950 and a graduate of Texas Tech University in 1954 with a B.B.A.. Van served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a member of First United Methodist Church where he was Chairman of the Board, Finance Chairman, and served on many other Church Boards. He served on the Board of Directors at Camp Butman and on the Texas Board of Realitors. Van was Mayor of Sweetwater, served on the Sweetwater City Council, and was selected Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce's Outstanding Young Man. He went in business with Glen Bennett as Bennett and Baucum from 1959 to 1989, where he discovered his love for real estate. Later he established Baucum Ranch Reality and was active until his death. He sold ranches all over Texas and in the northwest United States and was happiest when he was negotiating a deal. Van was a private pilot and loved flying. He obtained his pilot's license while attending Texas Tech and flew for many many years. Van was a giver, most of the time anonymously. One of his great joys was giving of himself or his resources. Van enjoyed going to Whataburger drinking coffee with his friends (which was numerous) and telling stories of others and especially about his family.
He is survived by his wife Neta Baucum of Sweetwater;
daughter, Kay Baucum of Sweetwater; two Sons, MatthewVan Baucum of Lubbock and Robert Newman "Bobby" Baucum & wife Rhona of Sweetwater; sister, Sarah Hampton of Sweetwater; Three granddaughters, Mara Dolan & husband Gene of Midland, Melissa Licklyter & husband Steve of Houston, and Maddie Baucum of Sweetwater; three great grandchildren, Faith Dolan, Ava Clare Dolan, and Rob Dolan all of Midland.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Patricia Ann (Ely) Baucum and his parents Walter Newman & Edna Ruth (Van Ness) Baucum.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Bob Hampton, David Carothers, Trey Aiken, Jerry Reves, Jay Lawrence, Gary Setliff, Bill Johnson, Cody Hughes.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Glen Bennett, Les Wootan, Phil Stribling, Jack Lawrence, Lloyd Harris, Gary Alston, Dr. Luther Martin, Allen King.
