James Vertis was born October 3, 1922 in Trent, Texas to Joseph Samuel and Nancy Elizabeth (Burton) Ross. He married Pearl Matthews June 30, 1962 in Trent. He started picking cotton at age 3 and did many things from there on including: farming, commercial hay baling, banking, truck stop and motel, skating rink, water well drilling, oil field business, building homes, raising cattle, uranium mining, a mechanic and much more. Also he was a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and B-17 pilot during World War II. Vertis was a member of the Trent United Methodist Church.
