Betty Pichard Barnett

Betty Pichard Barnett, 83, of Tallahassee, Florida died on Wednesday, April 24th. A native of Tallahassee, Betty was the youngest daughter of Claude Arthur Pichard, Sr. and Mary Emma Cureton Pichard and the wife of John W. Barnett, Jr. She graduated from Leon High School in the Class of 1948 and she graduated from the Florida State University with degrees in Elementary Education/Early Childhood Education and Visual Arts.

She was a teacher and office worker in public schools, taught at Holy Comforter Episcopal School and worked for Legislative Information at the Florida Legislature during several legislative sessions.

She was a charter member of St. Peter's Anglican Church where she was active in the Mary and Martha Church Circle, the "Press" Club, and Parish visitors.

She was a member of the Florida State University Alumnae Association, Alpha Chi Omega and Chapter F.P. of P.E.O. As a lover of history; she was a volunteer/docent of the Museum of Florida History for Twenty-five years, the 1984 Volunteer of the Year at the Old Capitol, a board member of the Florida Heritage Foundation and the Tallahassee Historical Society. She also volunteered at Grace Mission, Echo Weekend Meals, Leon County Schools, and Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.

Betty loved to sing, dance, travel, paint, needlepoint, and had many happy days at St. Teresa. She especially felt blessed with a loving God, wonderful family and great friends.

She is survived by a son, John W. Barnett, III and his wife, Dorothy; grandchildren, Wesley Barnett and Heather Wilkinson; a great-grandson Grier Wilkinson; her sister, Mary Pichard Sellers, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Claude and Mary Pichard; her husband of 49 years, John W. Barnett, Jr.; sisters, Nellie Elizabeth DeMilly and Charlotte Louise Causseaux; brother, Claude Arthur Pichard, Jr., and sister-in-law, Viola Montgomery Pichard.

Betty was beloved by many and will be greatly missed. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2013 at St. Peter's Anglican Church on 901 Thomasville Road followed by a reception at the home Joy and James Frank, 437 Frank Shaw Road. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the building fund of St. Peter's Anglican Church, 901 Thomasville Road, Tallahassee, Florida 32303.
