I was so blessed to be a student of Dean Summers and to serve as his graduate assistant while at the School in the early 90's. He was funny, insightful, and sharp witted, and he always had the very best advice. The lessons he taught us have stayed with me throughout my career thus far.

Keeping his dear family in my thoughts and prayers,

Ann Thornton
Vice Provost and University Librarian, Columbia University in the City of New York

Lorraine,
You have our deepest sympathies. Bill was such a great guy. We are so used to you two being the first to get hugged at church because you were in the pew next to us. He was always so sweet to the kids and a big help whenever Pisgah put out the call. No words can ease your pain but hopefully these beautiful stories about him will bring you the comfort that he really left his mark! We love you from the whole family...

For the last part of my career I was so proud to serve as F. William Summers Professor of Library and Information Studies at FSU, and for the remainder of my life will always proudly identify myself as "Emeritus." In Tallahassee Bill and I shared lunch many times, exchanged stories about library history, and laughed a lot about the characters it contains. I will miss him dearly.

A special man--he truly wanted his students to be successful. Many of our class lessons included life lessons--his wisdom and tact were both rare and wonderful. He will definitely be missed.
