Denise Marcelle Charlotte Perronne Mamatey

Denise Marcelle Charlotte PERRONNE Mamatey Denise Marcelle Charlotte PERRONNE Mamatey passed away Thursday, February 25, 2010, in Tallahassee, Florida, at the age of 89. Born June 3, 1920, in Audincourt, France, Mrs. Mamatey was a 1943 graduate of the University of Paris. She spent her childhood in France, and endured the German occupation of World War II. She and Victor S. Mamatey, former chairman of the history department at Florida State University, were married November 20, 1945, in Paris, then moved to the United States in 1948. They subsequently relocated in 1949 to Tallahassee, where she worked in the medical field until the mid 1960s while her husband served on the faculty at FSU. They moved in 1967 to Athens, Georgia, where Dr. Mamatey continued his career as a history professor at the University of Georgia. She was an excellent preparer of French cuisine, and a prodigious knitter — producing beautiful sweaters and baby clothes, and many giant afghan blankets. The Mamateys returned to Tallahassee in 2005 to spend their later years with family and friends. She was preceded in death by Dr. Mamatey in 2007, after 62 years of marriage. Survivors include two sons, Peter V. Mamatey of Tallahassee and Albert R. Mamatey of Evans, Georgia; two daughters-in-law, Patricia Dugan Mamatey of Tallahassee and Charlotte Mickler Mamatey of Evans; two grandsons, Kyle Mamatey and Chase Mamatey, both of Tallahassee; and two granddaughters, Heather Mamatey of Cambridge, Mass., and Alison Mamatey of Ilsan, South Korea. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, March 27, at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Presbyterian Church, 3158 Shamrock Street South (850-893-0617), Tallahassee. Bevis Funeral Home (850-385-2193) is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders, P.O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030.
