Fellis Carnley Obituary

Fellis J. Carnley

Fellis J. (F.J.) Carnley, 85, passed away at his home in Tallahassee on January 06, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. He had been bedridden since July 2010 due to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

Fellis was born in Opp, Alabama on December 23, 1928. After growing up in Opp, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as Master Sergeant in the Korean War where he received the Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal, and OCC Medal (Japan) 1 O/S Bar.

After the war, Fellis returned to his native Alabama, where he began his career in advertising and sales at WULA Radio in Eufaula. It was in Eufaula that he met the love of his life, Georgia. They were married on Christmas Day, 1953. During his tenure at WULA, Fellis worked in advertising and sales, and was a disk jockey, announcer, and station manager. In 1958, Fellis moved his family to Dothan when he joined WTVY Television where he worked in advertising and sales, and was announcer, news anchor, weather man, and sports announcer.

In 1963, Fellis joined WCTV Television in Tallahassee where he remained for the next 31 years, ultimately becoming Director of Sales and Advertising. Fellis was an active member of the Tallahassee Advertising Federation where he served as President and lobbyist, and The American Advertising Federation where he served as Governor of the Fourth District. He served as Chairmanship of the National Council of Governors of the American Advertising Federation. Among his many distinguished awards he was honored to receive the first annual "Dr. Royal H. Ray Award" as the "Outstanding Advertising Member of 1974" by the Tallahassee Advertising Federation. He is the only two time recipient of the "Silver Medal Award" in 1974 and 1980.

He was an active member of the Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce, The FSU Booster Club, and was a guest lecturer for the FSU Communications Department and member of Bradfordville First Baptist Church.

Fellis was an avid sportsman and sports enthusiast, who was most at home outdoors. He enjoyed deer hunting and bass fishing, and when not engaged in these activities, spent hours in his yard or watching his beloved FSU Seminoles play at home and on the road.

A devoted husband and loving father, Fellis is survived by his wife, Georgia Hatfield Carnley, his son, Robert (Bob) Carnley (Margaret Hanna), and daughter, Kathryn Carnley-Stanley.

Fellis was preceded in death by his father, Vash Asberry Carnley, mother, Bonnie Ruth Reeves Carnley, brothers, Donald B. Carnley, and Rex M. Carnley, son-in-law, Nathan P. Stanley, and grandparents John Wesley Carnley, and Viola Hall Carnley.

The family will receive friends at Abbey Funeral Home Chapel, 4037 N. Monroe Street, on Thursday, January 9, 2014 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The funeral will be at Abbey Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, January 10, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with entombment immediately following at Tallahassee Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308 or to The Alzheimer's Project, Inc., 301 East Tharpe Street, Tallahassee, FL 32303.

Special thanks to Big Bend Hospice, nurse Lesley Kissell, the Reverend Karen Pellett, Betty Morales, and Bianca for their steadfast guidance and support through his journey.
