Nicholas Ware "Nick" Eppes, Sr.

Nicholas Ware (Nick) Eppes, Sr. passed away Saturday, October 13, 2018. He was born November 4, 1927, to the late Edrie and Tom Eppes in Tallahassee, FL. Nick was proud of his heritage, being a great, great, great grandson of President Thomas Jefferson and great grandson of Francis Eppes who led the effort to establish the Seminary of West Florida, forerunner of Florida State University.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty Fletcher Eppes and three sons Nick, Jr. (Becky), Jeff (Joy) and Scott Eppes. Nick and Betty were blessed with nine grandchildren: Nicholas Eppes, III, Lindsey Eppes, Megan Eppes Barnes, Brad Eppes, Christopher Eppes, Drew Eppes, Candace Eppes Markowitz, Patrick Eppes, Daniel Eppes and step grandson Taylor Amiss. He is also survived by 8 great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his mother and father, brothers T.J. Jr, Jack, Lew and Jim Eppes.

He graduated from Leon High School, serves his country in the United States Army and attended Florida State University.

In 1959, Nick and his friend, Henry Edenfield, opened Eppes Edenfield Hardware & Paint Store on North Monroe Street. After several years, Nick bought Henry's share and renamed it Eppes Hardware. He opened Eppes Decorating Center two years later. Nick retired in 1995 and closed the Hardware Store.

After retirement, Nick did volunteer work at his church and delivered Meals on Wheels. He and his wife, Betty were charter members of Killearn United Methodist Church. Also after retirement they began spending much of their time at their home on Lake Mystic and became members of the Bristol United Methodist Church.

The family will receive visitors at Bevis Funeral Home at 200 John Knox Road in Tallahassee, FL at 2pm on Wednesday, October 17. The service will immediately follow at 3pm with a private burial afterwards at Oakland Cemetery.
