Elder Richard Mathews, Sr.

Elder Richard Mathews, Sr. of Tallahassee passed away peacefully at home on March 11, 2015 at the age of 102. He was born on March 20, 1912 in Wakulla County to the late Bishop Henry Frank Mathews and Mother Mary Evelyn Farmer Mathews.

In 1940 God called him into the ministry. He was licensed to preach by Elder Prince Sanders at St. Nora Primitive Baptist Church, Wakulla County which was the first church he pastored. Later he served as pastor of Pilgrim Rest P.B. Church in Wakulla. He also pastored St. Mary P.B. Church No. 2, Tallahassee, FL, Friendship Primitive Baptist Church, Tallahassee, FL and St. Paul P.B. Church, Miccosukee, FL. Elder Mathews also served as Moderator of the Old West Florida Primitive Baptist Church Annual Union and the Leon County Fifth Sunday Union for more than 50 years.

Elder Mathews was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Mother Easter Allen in 1932 by Elder Prince Sanders. She preceded him in death on March 10, 1988. God blessed this union with ten beautiful children; six girls and four boys. In 1994 he was united in Holy Matrimony to Mother Phinia Nicholson and to this union he was blessed with six Stepchildren; Calvin Issac (Lisa), Darrell Isaac (Delores), Vi Dennis (Al), Doris Robinson, Rebecca Salter and Alonzo Nicholson.

He is also survived by 32 Grandchildren, 44 Great Grandchildren, 25 Great-Great-Great Grand Children and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and a devoted Sister-in-Law Omega Mathews, Dayton, Ohio.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at the Old West Enrichment Center, 2344 Lake Bradford Rd., Tallahassee, FL. Interment at Southside Cemetery. Elder Mathews will rest in the mortuary from 10:00 A.M.-7:00 P.M. on Friday, March 20, 2015 at Strong and Jones Funeral Home Chapel 551 West Carolina Street Tallahassee, FL 32301, 850-224-2139 and on Saturday, March 21, 2015 prior to the funeral service at the Old West Enrichment Center from 9:00 A.M.-11:00 A.M.
