Violet "Vi" Mason Obituary
Violet "Vi" Mason

Tallahassee - Violet "Vi" Lorraine Dethlefs Mason (Mrs. Edwin Mason) passed away peacefully on July 5, 2018, in Tallahassee at the age of 94. Vi was born on March 20, 1924, in Los Angeles, California, and spent much of her youth in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she later during World War II met the love of her life, Lt. Edwin Lee Mason. They spent 71 years together raising a family with four children and, until Ed's death in May 2016, living and serving others in three Florida communities: Miami, Marianna, and Tallahassee.

Vi was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, but above all she was a devoted wife. Her home was always a welcoming place where she took joy in preparing many meals for family and friends. Vi and Ed were inseparable as they traveled countless miles across the country and worldwide. Between 1976 and 1995 they served numerous terms as Baptist lay missionaries in Ethiopia, Kazakhstan, and Albania.

Since moving to Tallahassee in 1965, Vi was a faithful member of First Baptist Church and a member of the Early Risers Sunday School class. She served as President of the FBC Woman's Missionary Union (WMU). Along with her husband, Vi served as an active volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many years until age 89. In 2008 the City of Tallahassee and the Tallahassee Senior Center Foundation awarded Vi and Ed Mason the Silver Star Award for their steadfast community service.

Vi's life was all about family, friends and Christian service. She leaves behind a monumental legacy of family survivors: son Roger (Carolyn) of Ocala, son Clay (Tina) of Tallahassee, daughter Candice Moore of Damascus, Arkansas, and son Bruce of Marietta, Georgia; grandchildren Palmer Mason, Paxton Mason (Diana), Caroline Mason Blessing (Bradley), Bill Mason, Shelley Mason Gandy (Bert), Samuel Mason (Siera), Jonathan Mason (Amber), Cara Mason, Jim Logan, Jack Logan, David Logan and Storey Mason. Vi is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is scheduled for Vi on Saturday, July 14, at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church. Following the service, a reception will be held in the Welcome Center of the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the First Baptist Church Mission Fund, 108 W. College Ave., Tallahassee, FL 32301 or to Meals on Wheels at Elder Care Services, 2518 W. Tennessee St,, Tallahassee, FL 32304.
