Richard Rice Obituary

Richard (Rick) Errol Rice

Richard (Rick) Errol Rice passed away peacefully with his wife Christie by his side, January 17. He was born in Malden, Massachusetts January 23, 1950 to June Gunn Rice and Ted Sahl. Rick was predeceased by June and his step father Robert Rice, sister Lynne, and survived by his wife, Christie Koontz and her children Katelyn Lynch Amraen (Dan) and Thomas Lynch, and brother Marc Rice (wife Lorri and niece, Lorrilynne.)

Rick grew up in South Florida and battled arthritis from age two. He was in and out of hospitals his whole life. By age four he knew he was an artist and this was the gift he shared with the world. The gift became a skill when he began teaching graphic arts at Lively Tec and then built a similar program at TCC. He ended his teaching career (online) at FSU. Thousands of students' lives and work are shaped by Rick. He was proud of the many art-related awards he won over the decades (e.g., American Advertising Silver Medal from the Tallahassee chapter) —while participating in private and public agency work including the design of the old TMH logo.

Rick had a "coat of many colors" and loved music. He played the guitar till his arthritic fingers curled, and sang in a beautiful tenor. Amidst the chaos of health issues he would often be singing quietly along with James Taylor or the music of his dear friends Bob Hill or JP Walters. He loved his "Home that Hill Built" and had gardens and parties galore. He loved radio airplanes, politics, the news and great movies, and his close friends who surrounded him to the end. And FSU football and special hot dogs were Rick's joy in the fall.

He and his wife Christie travelled all over the world with her public library work at FSU, and he photographed many places, recently painting watercolors of some. He enjoyed the people at the Senior Center art classes, and recently joined a new gallery, Southern Exposure in Railroad Square, showing his work old and new for the first time this fall.

He proudly worked out at Gold's Gym three times a week for years and kept his strength up for the next health battle. Rick was a soldier in his own war. For the record, Rick had both hips replaced twice, his knees and shoulders and elbow once, and had a defibrillator!! He saluted his "dream team" doctors who kept him going. But his big heart finally gave out. The battle has ended for him—but the challenge remains for us to "Be Brave."

Donations may be made to the Juvenile Arthritis Foundation http://www.arthritis.org/donate.php, the FSU Foundation # F07558, where Rick and his wife Christie and a private donor created a scholarship fund or certainly any organization of your choice. Services will be at the Miccosukee Land Co-op Community Center, 9601 Miccosukee Rd, at 9 am (visiting and coffee) and service at 10, (850 597-1490) on January 23, Rick's birthday.

Mr. Rice was my graphic design teacher at TCC. He helped me immensely, going above what was required and really started me off on my career. I am grateful for his work, and looked forward to seeing him again. He will be missed.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Rice around last Thanksgiving. I spent time with him each holiday as it passed by. I only learned of his passing yesterday, and wanted to give my condolences to his family - from me and the others who had the privilege of working with him. All the best to his family during this time.

Rick was my teacher and mentor at TCC many years ago. I only knew him for a short time but his impact was great on my life and many others. So sorry to hear of his passing but know that many people were touched by his presence. I feel immensely blessed to have known him. Missing my friend and my teacher...

I met Rick when I had just started my shop 'care packages.' What great insight he had. He made several of our brochures and did a spectacular job of marketing for us. Great listener, great talent, great guy. I also had the pleasure of seeing him at Sr Center painting. So creative and so generous with his time. RIP Rick.

Rick was genuine, generous, and an absolute good guy. He was immensely talented and I enjoyed working with him. But, more importantly, he was always a true and loving friend. He is missed.

Words I know Christie never wanted to say...and surely, words I never wanted to hear: Rick died... and yet, he does live in the hearts of so many people, young and old alike.
I met Rick in 1971...in an entirely different universe somehow. His first gift to me THE LITTLE PRINCE ... and now he tends his own flowers in a place of no pain, no struggle.
My world has been changed forever by this gentle man -- knowing someone believed in me, loved me, laughed and cried with me. He played "Love is the opening door" at my wedding..and so appropriate for his life reminded me that love, in its most honest and true state, still exists.
Despite his own horrific physical battles, he was always there to listen to mine -- to encourage me to keep on fighting, to stay live just one more day.
After almost 40 years of his being in my life, I can't imagine his not walking next to us all.
I have come to love so much his dear wife, Christie, and forever will have gratitude for the love and care she gave Rick during their years together. My prayers for her just now are constant.
I am in Richmond, Virginia -- no longer able to travel. How I wish I could be there on Saturday in the celebration of his life.
Rick is part of who I am, and even as a poet...there are no words to describe my gratitude for his being in my life.
I have loved him all these years, and always will.

Christie, my heart is heavy for you. To have been loved by someone like Rick is a rare gift. Such an enormous talent, such a generous soul, sharing everything he had and knew with anyone who needed it. A smile that would fill your heart, a keen mind that moved people forward together. A treasure to you and to all of us. Rest in the peace you deserve, Rick. You made us all better.

I remember the night I "cooked the goose" and made a rice dish with crabmeat, I thought Rick was going to explode he ate so much, which delighted me very much. He was such a wonderful talented person that was curious about everything. He loved his friends, family, FSU but most of all he loved you, dear Christie, with all his heart. We shall miss him very much. We love you and are here for you! Glo, Jim and Hannah.

I FIRST met Ricky at Royal Palm Elementary in our first grade class in South Miami. I was quickly grabbed by his Artistic abilities! he would pull out these incredible pencil sketches of war ships and war planes of WW II. And would tell us the maker of each plane or type warship..He was a child genius,we quickly became friends, and I walked home with him after class to meet his family on occasion. We were just 6 years old,but he brought out the artistic ability that I didn't even know I yet had. I wasn't nearly close to being the Artist he was and I admired. But It has stayed with me all my life, from drawing, painting, building and airbrushing surfboards,to Custom Painting Motorcycles, and lastly building Custom Electric Guitars. And all of these desires of creativity came from meeting Ricky Rice and his incredible artistic ability. I am saddened that we reconnected just a mere 3 years ago on Facebook and he's no longer available to see my work,or me to see his...Rip old friend.....

Christie, my heart goes out to you and all of Rick's friends. I think I met Rick when he was only 20 years old. At that age I knew Rick was a very special guy. It has been my honor to have known him as a friend over the years and it was a pleasure to watch him "light" up when he was around art, music or very old wooden ships. He would talk to me for hours about it. The craft of those old ships were like living art to him where form and function came together to express beauty and story. I loved watching him as he would talk about that. He was an adventurer and explorer when it came to life. He brought that into his art and music. He was always a positive force in everything I saw him tackle. I will always remember Rick with great fondness and will miss his positive spirit. God Bless.

Christie, you know how much my heart goes out to you. Though we know we're mortal, each and every death is agony. Let's comfort ourselves that Rick is in good company with all his loved ones and friends that have gone before him, in a celestial garden in another dimension, with beautiful landscaping that exceeds his high standards! Love you!
