Philip Schlenoff Obituary

Philip Samuel Schlenoff

Philip Samuel Schlenoff, 24, beloved son of Zeina and Joe Schlenoff and younger brother of Natasha Schlenoff, passed away on April 26 in Davis, CA. He was born in Tallahassee, FL, March 11, 1992. Philip was a respected and published scientist, teacher, and humanitarian. He loved science, exploring new concepts, and playing the piano. He adored his family and his girlfriend, Kristen. No one who met Philip will forget his infectious curiosity and ambition to improve the world around him.

He accomplished an incredible amount in his short life. He won several local, regional, and State science fairs; twice he went to the International Science Fair, and won many awards. In 2010, Philip was awarded the title of Tallahassee's Best and Brightest (Health and Science). Throughout high school and college, he completed internships at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Strasbourg in France, at the Chemistry Department at Florida State University, and at a technology startup. Philip was heavily inspired by Nobelist Sir Harry Kroto, and accompanied him to the 2015 Nobel Laureate meeting in Lindau, Germany. Philip worked with Sir Harry on "GEOSET," a global educational outreach video project; through his work with GEOSET, and at Florida State University, Philip coached, tutored, encouraged, motivated, reassured, helped and inspired many young scientists to present their passion for science and complex ideas in an understandable and accessible manner. The nature of Philip's work in science is a reflection of his deep personal commitment to service and helping others. He was a giving young man whose selflessness touched the lives of many.

Philip graduated from Maclay School in Tallahassee, FL in 2010, attended the University of Florida, then the Florida State University, where he obtained a B.S. in Biochemistry with Honors in 2015. Philip started a Ph.D program at the University of California, Davis, in the Department of Chemistry, under the mentorship of Prof. Gang-Yu Liu.

An open service will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 4665 Thomasville Rd, Tallahassee, FL 32309, at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 14, 2016. A reception at the church will follow. In lieu of flowers, Philip's family requests donations to the Philip Schlenoff Scholarship Fund. Checks can be mailed to the College of Arts & Sciences, The Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL 32306, or donations can be made online at www.philipschlenoffscholarship.org. To the family of Philip Schlenoff,

Philip was in the Bio II lab when i met him his last year here at FSU. We had a 20 minute conversation in my office and I was very impressed at his intelligence, enthusiasm and interest in helping the other students. It did not take much of an interaction with him for me to know he was an inspiration, and I watched with interest afterwards to see that he indeed was a leader in the classroom. It was with shock that I read in the newspaper of his passing. I was thinking of him today, and I want you to know that in our short conversation, he mentioned his family with pride. I hope this gives you some sense of peace with his passing. Sincerely, Geoff Brown, Dept. of Biological Science, FSU.

Dear Zeina, Joe, and Natasha,

Just the other week, I saw Philip's name in the list of former winners in the Tallahassee Best and Brightest competition. His name will always be there to inspire the new generations of Maclay students to excel in Science and Technology. This is just one example of many ways how Philip has left his mark in the world. it started in Tallahassee but went so much farther. I am sure that somebody in the world is learning right now about antibody coated magnetic nanoparticles or 3D printing from one of Philip's Geoset videos.
Philip was such a talented and passionate man that he had made a real difference in the world. It is unfair that he did not had as much time as he deserved but he did so much with the time that he had! We all better people because we met Philip. I am glad that I had a chance to know him and I am very sorry about your loss.

With the warmest regards,
Igor, Irina

A colleague, a friend, a legend. What can you say about a person who was always ready to help others.

In February last year, Philip and I were tasked with documenting the highlights of a conference on 3D printing, stitching it together with interviews and presenting it by noon the next day for the end of the conference. As always, Philip rose to the challenge, interviewing speakers from NASA and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. We worked through the night to make sure we depicted the heart of the conference. The next day, we sat down in the audience, utterly exhausted from the night before and watched the video play out to a receptive audience. With a discreet high-five and a smile the job was done.

Philip's character and skills were exceptional, and I remember Sir Harold Kroto telling me, Philip was the shining example of what the GEOSET initiative was all about.

A heart of gold and a pillar of excellence.

I miss him.

May God grant you peace and comfort in the days ahead.

I will always remember Philip as an adventurous and rambunctious young man. Running into him a few years ago on FSU campus I was so impressed to see what he had grown up to be. He was soft spoken, respectful, free of judgement and so welcoming. It made my week to have crossed paths with him that day. My heart breaks with this news.

Dearest Joe, Zeina, Natasha, and Kristen,
As we read over these many many messages of condolences we realize just how many lives Philip touched. There will be so many more coming as well. Our family only knew him for a short time, but in that time we can wholeheartedly say that his keen intelligence, wit, love for family , love for his woman, and joyful embrace of his gift for scientific discovery was so very obvious and infectious! Even in that short time...we feel very privileged to have known him.

I first met Philip when he was in High School. He impressed me as he was always well mannered and respectful. His joy for life was contagious. My life will be forever changed because of my interactions with Philip. He was one of those kids that you look at and watch and say to yourself, "Anyone would be proud to be his parents." A good looking young man, who is kind, intelligent, personable and never met a stranger because he immediately made them his friend. Philip touched my life in a small way when compared to Joe and Zeina. I miss Philip terribly...I cannot imagine what Joe & Zeina are going through. You are in my prayers & thoughts forever. A brilliant graduate student, a highly dependable co-worker, a responsible teacher, a loving son, an energetic brother, and most importantly, the most positive, happy and loyal friend. That defines Philip, a gift to us all. Sadly, those of us at University of California, Davis only had him for a brief period of time from September 2015 to April 2016. Upon his departure on April 26, 2016, we feel a profound and deep sadness.

Representing his scientific family, we modified "Winnie the Pooh":

Dear Zeina and Joe,

My heart is broken and I am very sad and upset about the loss of Philip S. Schlenoff. Words cannot express our shock and sorrow.

Philip did cancer research in my lab when he was 14-year old high school student with my former graduate student Dr. Zahraa I. Khamis. He also took my Biochemistry I class in 2013. He was a very smart, gentle, nice, diligent, and highly talented young man. I have very nice memories of Philip, especially in August 2015, Philip played piano for me during the celebration of his graduation from FSU with his B.S. degree in biochemistry at your beautiful home. Philip introduced me to his loving girlfriend Kristen, her parents, her grandma, and his other friends. Philip adored his father Joe and loved his mother Zeina and sister Natasha deeply. He also told me that his girlfriend Kristen was his best friend, support system, and the true love of his life and she would join him at UC Davis soon. He was full of life, hope, and bright future and we were so happy for him. Every time he saw me he gave me a hug. He told me he would come back to see me when he was in town. He was almost like my academic "son" because I watched him grow up from a little child to an extremely promising, intelligent, kind, and gorgeous young man.

I am so upset and devastated about this horrible news and I feel the pain and suffering of you, Natasha, and Kristen. Philip was a selfless, loving, and caring young man. I am sure Philip wanted all of you to be strong, peaceful, and happy, and grow out of this misery soon.

Life is precious and we need to love each other more and take better care of each other. Please let me know if I can do anything to comfort you and support you during this difficult time and in the future.

Let's celebrate Philip's short but beautiful life! We wish Schlenoff family all the best. Please take best care.

Dear Schlenoff Family, I am so very sorry for your loss. The world has lost a great young mind in Philip. I feel fortunate to have had him as a high school student at Maclay. I remember one of his science fair projects of using nanoparticles to try to cure certain types of cancer. You could see his passion and enthusiasm when he spoke of it. I hope that in the passing of time your family can find peace.

I'm very much sad & shocked. I wish that was just a nightmare & not reality. This is tooooo early for a smart young scientist full of hope, dreams, knowledge & enthusiasm!! May his soul rest in peace & may God be with his family.

Dear Joe,

This bad news is overwhelming. Philip was an amazing force when he worked with us at MIT as a high school student. I am so deeply sorry for you and your family.

I knew Philip as a young, energetic, polite and quiet young man.
I can only ask almighty God to recieve him in heaven and shower his parents and his sister and all his big family and friends with his endless comfort and bestow upon them peace, tranquility and love.
My prayers are for you and my heart stands with you in this sad time.
I raise my hands to God asking that Philip's memory will live forever and that his soul is in heaven filled with joy, happiness and contentment.
May Allah bless you Joe, Zeina and Natasha be with you and protect you.
