Jean Hoverson Vanderplas

87, longtime resident of Indian Rocks Beach and Largo, died on January 5, 2019, in Largo, Florida. Jean was born on May 21, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, the only child of Dr. Emil T. and Marces Elworthy Hoverson. She earned a Bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois and Master's and Doctorate degrees in psychology from Washington University in St. Louis, where she later worked as a researcher and a lecturer. Predeceased by her husband, James "Van" Vanderplas, she is survived by four children, Martin Fitch, Cynthia Sheller, Brian Vanderplas, and Steven Vanderplas. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Jean was a member of Seminole Christian Fellowship in Largo. Funeral services will be held at Seminole Christian Fellowship, 10202 131st St. North, Largo, Florida, at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 13. In lieu of flowers, friends may offer donations to Seminole Christian Fellowship.
