LAWYER, Emily (Wortman)

72, of Tampa, Florida, formerly of Chardon, Ohio passed away on January 5, 2019, peacefully in her sleep at the Habana Health Care Facility. Emily was born on January 23, 1946 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Ray C. Wortman and May Meridith. In 1964, she graduated as Valedictorian of Eustis High School in Florida. She went on to graduate with honors from Mercer University in 1968. In 1970 she graduated #4 in her class from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University and was an editor of the Mercer Law Review. She was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1970. On June 14 1970, Emily married Marty Lawyer. She was employed as an associate attorney at the law firm of Carlton, Fields from 1971-1977. In 1973 her first son, Christopher was born and in 1979 her second son, Andrew was born. From 1977 to 1982 she left the practice of law to concentrate on parenting her two sons. She resumed practicing law in 1982 as a sole practitioner and became an expert in Social Security Disability Law. Two of her cases resulted in reversals at the US Court of Appeals and became legal precedent in Social Security law. She gave presentations at two separate national meetings of the National Organization of Social Security Claimants Representatives. She was a life-long avid reader and loved to travel. She was known for her sharp intellect and insight. Her warm smile could light up a room. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and May; brother, Douglas Wortman, brother, Norman Wortman, and brother, Robert Wortman. She is survived by her ex-husband, Marty Lawyer; sister, Barbara Ianiro; son, Christopher Lawyer, son, Andrew Lawyer; her daughter-in-law, Amanda Lawyer; and her granddaughter, Lena, whom she loved completely. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at Adams and Jennings Funeral Home on January 26, 2019, at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, Emily's family requests that donations be made to the National Down's Syndrome Society by going online to www.ndss.org. The arrangements are under the artful care of:
