HAMBY, JoAnn D. 89, passed peacefully at home February 13, 2021. She was surrounded by family and had recently come under Life Path Hospice care. Jo Ann was born in Walhalla, a suburb of Greenville, SC. The daughter of Ione and Arthur Gillespie, she moved to Tampa in 1963 with her husband, Leonard Hamby and young children. Jo Ann had a 30 plus year career as an Accounting Manager for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service in Greenville, SC, Tampa, FL, Dallas, TX and Honolulu, HI. She retired from AAFES in 1986 and returned to Tampa in 1988. In retirement, she also engaged in a second 20 year career with H&R Block. While traveling extensively for work, Jo Ann enjoyed pleasure trips to Europe, countries along the Pacific Rim, Mexico, Puerto Rico and many visits throughout the United States, including a salmon fishing trip to Alaska. Having a passion for Genealogy, she often made trips with her children to South Carolina for the annual Fendley Family Reunion, as well as numerous other venues for Genealogy conferences. Jo Ann enjoyed a full life filled with activity. She was a member of the Sweet Adeline's Choral Group, Egypt Temple Shrine Women's Auxiliary, Tampa Red Hat Society, volunteer at The Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, Desoto Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and Florida Society Colonial Dames XV11 Century. Possessing a wry sense of humor and singular wit, Jo Ann loved reminiscing and sharing stories of growing up as a 'farm girl' in South Carolina. Jo Ann is survived by two siblings, Jerry Gillespie and his wife, Diane of Anderson SC and Donnie Gillespie of Melbourne, FL; and her children, Carole Bailey and her husband, Robert of Rowlett, TX, Alice Funk and her husband, Ronald of Lutz, FL and Leonard Hamby Jr. also of Lutz, FL. She is also survived by adult grandchildren, Casie Triplett, Cambriann Funk and Trevor Funk. Jo Ann also enjoyed being a part of her seven year old twin great-granddaughters lives, Dallas and Dixie Funk. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. A graveside service will be held Feb. 24, 2021, 10:30 am, at Hillsboro Memorial Gardens, 2323 W. Brandon Blvd., Brandon, FL 33511. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Life Path Hospice may be made.
