HERRINGTON, Nevis Hall 87, of Seminole, was taken peacefully to heaven while he was sleeping on the morning of March 25, 2021. He was born on a farm in rural Mississippi, February 24, 1934, the son of sharecroppers, Earl Benjamin and Ruby Sutton Herrington. Through hard work and perseverance, his parents were able to buy a farm, acre by acre, outside of Prentiss, MS, where Nevis and his family moved to when he was a young boy. Nevis graduated from Prentiss High School; then scholarships to Mississippi College and Vanderbilt University enabled him to receive Bachelor's and Master's degrees. A job offer to teach social studies at St. Petersburg High School brought him to Florida in 1958. After several active and involved years at St. Petersburg High, in 1966 Nevis accepted a teaching position at St. Petersburg Junior College (now SPC) in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department. During this time, he also served as an adjunct instructor at Eckerd College and University of South Florida. In 1979, Nevis was called to serve as Assistant to the President at SPJC. He served in various administrative roles and retired in 1997 as Vice-President for Human Resources. He enjoyed a long and active retirement and traveled the world with his wife, Kate. He also enjoyed frequent trips with his children and grandchildren to his tree farm in Prentiss. Nevis loved his large family and was loved in return. They enjoyed many wonderful times together throughout his lifetime. He was predeceased by his parents, three brothers; and one sister. He is survived by his wife, Kate Kuhns Herrington; six children, Deborah Herrington (husband Roy Miller), Susan Meisner, Danny Herrington, Diane Herrington, Gina Engerer (Dale), and Dr. Brett Herrington (Coree); 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life service will be held May 8, 10 am, at Seminole First Baptist Church. Because of continuing severity of COVID-19, all CDC protocols will be in place to protect everyone attending. Masks required. No reception will be held afterwards. If you wish, memorial donations may be made to Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches, the Parkinsons Foundation, or to Seminole First Baptist Church, where Nevis was a member and a Bible study teacher for many years. Nevis Herrington hired me for my first job at SPJC in 1989. His kindness and professionalism helped calm me on that day when I was offered the position, unsure then whether I would stay at the college very long. Nevis served the college well, working on projects with great care and professionalism into his retirement. More than two decades later I became acquainted with Kate, after a year of being in a book club with her and not knowing her connection to Nevis. It was easy to see how the two of them were good for each other. Kate, I wish you and your family peace as you say farewell, holding all of the memories you made in your hearts.
