BAKER, Vernon Ira, died April 26, 2007. He was the son of Clifford and Clara; beloved husband for 64 years to Jean Chmielowiec Baker; beloved father of Donna Claire (Frank) Barkdoll of Cleveland, Ohio, Richard (Kay) of Collingswood, N.J., James (Kathleen) of Downingtown, Pa., and Jonathan (Barbara) of Cranford, N.J. Vern and Jean married in 1942, lived in Clifton, N.J., from post World War II until 1977, and recently returned from 28 years in Sun City Center, Fla. to be near family. Jean died April 12, 2006. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Yingling, Burlington, N.J.; and by his brother, Byard, Titusville, Fla. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, William, Michael and Stephanie Cioce (Donna Claire), Kelly and Jeremy Baker (James and Kathleen), Justin and Rachel Baker (Jonathan and Barbara); and five great-grandchildren, (Austin, Savannah Cioce and Steven Leannis) William and Angela near Cleveland, Ohio) and Will and Sophia Cioce (Michael and Pam near Atlanta, Ga). Vern' s deceased sister was Olive Pruiksma. After serving in the South Pacific in World War II, Vern worked with the U.S. Post Office in Clifton, N.J., retiring as a postal supervisor. To help support a growing family, Vern worked part-time jobs, including bartender, construction laborer and auto work. He was a past president of the Holy Name Society at St. Paul' s Church, and later assisted at Pope Pius XII HS in Passaic, In Florida, Vern enjoyed retirement while active with family, friends, travel, gardening, dancing and golf. For years, he worked as a starter on Sun City Center golf courses. Vern was generous with his time and a helpful father, treasured grandfather, and a man of deep faith, enthusiasm and compassion. He was always a loyal friend and enjoyed talking with people. Recently, he said his favorite jobs were delivering mail, bartender and starter at golf courses because he could gab with the people. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Vern' s memory to the United Way. Friends and relatives are invited to a 11 a.m. funeral Mass Monday, April 30, 2007, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church at 1571 S. Martine Avenue Scotch Plains, NJ 07076.
