HARTSHORNE, Walter J

A devoted patriarch and loyal friend of many entered eternal life February 6, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.

Walter "Wally" Hartshorne, who turned 89 January 23, was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was raised in Gerritsen Beach. His parents were William and Gertrude Hartshorne. He attended P.S. 194 and Brooklyn Tech High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953.

He married the love of his life, Gertrude MacLellan of Brooklyn, New York October 2, 1954. He worked as a Custodian Engineer for the New York City Board of Education for more than twenty-five years.

In 1990, Walter and Gertrude retired to New Port Richey, Florida where they built their dream house in which they resided until Gertrude passed away in 2000. Wally eventually moved into the Seven Springs Community where, in true "Wally-spirit," he made many friends and participated in sports and trivia games, led the charge in many card games, and was always the life of the party.

Through the years in New York and Florida, Wally was the ultimate volunteer. He coached numerous youth sports teams, tutored students in reading and mathematics, organized high school students in Key Club, and served in various leadership and organizational roles in Kiwanis International. He was a true patriot who served his country both in service and as a member of the American Legion for 60 years.

Walter is survived by his sister, Joan Welsh; brother-in-law, Joseph; children, Steve (Carrie), Bill (Jennifer), Jean Styles (Mark), Tom (Eileen), Mary Jane Moran (Danny); 11 grandchildren; six (soon to be seven) great-grandchildren; and numerous admiring nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please make contributions in Walter's honor to Gulfside Hospice (https://www.gulfside.org/make-a-gift.html).
