It's sad to lose a classmate. Al and I met in early Sunday School and were classmates all the way thru high school , even on the football team.
Pat , be well.

Dear Mary & Bruce, my heart felt sympathy to you. Alvin and I were in grade school together when he lived on Devonshire Rd. in Coraopolis. It saddens me when old friends pass. May God bless.

My name is Melvin Reisz. I had a printmaking class with Alvin when in college at Thiel. I also have a print from him which I still love. I eventually became a jeweler and a jewelry designer. I have a store in Portsmouth NH that has been there for 31 years. My daughter (24) has now joined the business. So I thank him for the small part he played in developing my artistic side.

Prof Dunkle was one of my favorite professors. I would tell me stories about my dad " Rip Taylor" during the class breaks. My Dad spoke very highly of him and he will be miss by one and all.

To the Dunkle family -- I was really sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts and prayers go out to you. Al Dunkle was my major professor between 1965-69 and what I learned from him has been in inspiration to me all these years. Silk screening, which I first learned from him, continues to be my main artistic expression and I try to pass on his teachings to those I've taught at the college and community level. He continues to live on in the lessons he gave.

Dear Mary,
Even though words fail me at times like this, I wanted to extend my condolences on Al's passing. It's been forty years since I graduated from Thiel, but the lessons I learned in his classes have never been forgotten. I put them to use every day, both as an artist and as a museum worker. Perhaps most importantly, his oft-heard comment that a work had "interesting areas" always encourages me to search for that spark of creativity and excitement in everything. His etching, Thaw, has hung on my walls all these years as a reminder of those lessons, and I will cherish it even more now.
Sincerely,
John Coppola, '69

Dear Mary and Bruce,
I admired Al's gifts for analysis and deconstruction; he taught me to always consider the big picture and to see the ways in which all things are interrelated. In defense of the study of art, Al would tell me that I would find ways to solve all types of problems in the studio. He was right. It's through seeing and reflecting that we are able to change.
He was an incredible mentor who modeled a strong work ethic. He privileged us by working as a master in the studio. As we witnessed his determination we appreciated that success requires an ability to work through disappointments.
He was a great teacher and mentor.
With deepest sympathy,

Dear Mrs. Dunkle and Bruce - I, too, am a former art student at Thiel College (along with Patricia Curran) and wish to express my deepest sympathy for your loss. Mr. Dunkle (I can't call him Al either) taught me to "see" the world around me and to transfer those sights to paper. One of my fondest memories was the morning he took his 8am drawing class out to a field behind the college to draw in the fog. We sat there, papers curling on our boards, trying to transfer the blurry shapes and forms of nature into pencil sketches. It was a wonderful and meaningful experience I'll never forget - just as I will never forget Mr. Dunkle. May it comfort you to know how much he meant to so many of his students. (I am also the proud owner of one of his prints and will always cherish it.) Keeping you in thought.

Dear Mrs. Dunkle and Bruce,
You both have my deepest sympathies in the passing of my former art prof, Mr. Dunkle (calling him Al does not come natural). He was one of my favorites to be sure, and what I learned from him can't fit in this little space. I remember him speaking of his family just a bit, but the love he had for you was always very evident. When I was a senior (1975), he gave us a chance to purchase one of his beautiful prints (title - December 2) at a student price. I jumped at the chance, and have had it hung in my house as long as I can remember. It is one of my most prized possessions. Ironically, my husband completed making a new frame for it a few weeks ago, and we hung it in a more prominent place. I look at it daily with such fond memories and remember valuable lessons I learned from him and hopefully have passed on to my children. My deepest condolences to you both. He truly made a difference in many many lives, more I am sure than he ever realized. Take care.

Mary and Bruce,
As a Magna Cum Laude Art Grad of Thiel,
"Uncle Dunkle" taught me to "run it up the flag pole and see if anyone salutes it." I have many a time and my thoughts are with you both.

Mary & Bruce,
I am very saddened to learn about Al. I hope that you know the great impact that Al had on both his students' lives and the lives of his colleagues. I had the good fortune to share the early days of my career at Thiel with Al, eating lunch with him on the Third floor every day for several years. Al was a natural storyteller. He regaled us with tales from his rough fishing days, but could switch gears and speak with great eloquence on the world of art. He was a compassionate, thoughtful man who was a mentor to me. I will miss him very much and his voice will echo in the halls of Thiel for all who new him. I hope that your memories will sustain you.
In sympathy and with great respect,
