Billie Pursley Obituary

PURSLEY, Billie Barron died Feb. 6, 2011, at the age of 93, under the kind care of The Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. Billie is preceded in death by husband Walter, who died in 2005. She is survived by 2 daughters, Linda Leckey of Tampa, Tricia Pursley, Pass-A-Grille, and a son Walter Pursley Jr., Anna Maria Island; grandchildren Lillie McPherson, Central, SC, Leah Armstrong, Tampa, Lila Miller, New York City, and Charlie Pursley, Anna Maria Island; great-grandchildren PJ and Sophie McPherson and Andrew Armstrong; great-grandson Thomas Hendry Armstrong is expected to arrive in March. Billie was born in Ft. Myers, but moved to raise her family in St. Petersburg in the early 1940s. She attended the University of Florida and taught school in a one room school house on Sanibel Island at a time when the island was accessible only by ferry. Billie loved to travel and had fabulous trips to China, South America, Europe and Alaska, though her favorite was Great Britain. For many years with husband Walt, she spent 6 months of the year in North Wales. She enjoyed a second home in Blowing Rock, NC. Her final years were spent at College Harbor Retirement Community. She loved people, poetry, bridge and dark chocolate. She adored entertaining family and friends and did so with charm and in grand style. She was funny, quippy and quick-witted but never, ever, mean spirited. She enjoyed people's differences and welcomed diversity. She was courageous in the face of illness. She adapted to all of her life's hardships with grace and gusto. Her family attributes her long life to her bright spirit, flexible point of view and firm faith in God. Billie will be buried alongside Walter at the Frierson-Hendry Cemetery in Ft. Myers, Pursley's family cemetery. Memorial contributions to The Hospice of the Florida Suncoast will be greatly appreciated.

Dear Linda,Tricia, and Walter,

Thank you for the beautiful video of your mother. Her ninety three years were well spent and I'm so grateful that she was in my life.
Your home was a second home to me during the fifties and oh, what a fun home it was. Linda was my best friend, Tricia was Toonie and Walter was Wassie. Your parents treated me like one of the family---just as they did many others.
Your mother was so wise, an encourager, and she had such a zest for all life offered. I went to see her a few years ago and expected to feel depressed. No, she was as witty and funny (and cute) as ever. What an inspiration! She talked about off of you with such great love and affection.
She will always be a bright light in my life and I'll remember her kindness, her generosity and the way she lived her faith and beliefs---there was nothing wishy-washy about Billy Pursley.
She will be missed. You all are in my thoughts and prayers, With love, Rosemary

Tricia ~

Deepest sympathy to you and your family. Your Mom was quite a gal and lived such a full life! I very much enjoyed reading about her. My Mom will be 93 this year. She is wheelchair and housebound, but we are grateful and blessed to still have her in our lives. I'm sending you a prayer for comforting memories and peace in the days ahead. My best, Joyce Reinhardt Francis ~ NEHI '70

Linda, Tricia , and Walt (Wassie),
I am saddened to learn of the loss of your mother - such a wonderfully long and rich life. I remember fondly the time we spent together when we were children, and the many times our mothers (my mother was Gerry Nickels) played bridge together. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
Fondly,

Dearest Tricia and Family,

I have the fondest memories of your mother and she was one of my favorite of my girlfriends moms! I remember a trip you and I took in the car with your Mom to Miami when a tornado was coming down the Alligator Alley ( a little two lane highway at the time) Your mother was very calm and reassuring and we decided at the last minute if we had to get in the ditch to get in a low laying area we would. All I could think about were those Alligators! I also remember how pretty she was and how kind and thoughtful she was to me when I spent the night. How lucky you and your siblings are to have enjoyed your mom up untill 93! What a wonderful legacy she and your father have left I admired them both greatly.

In love, friendship and deep sympathy.
