Just finished "Out Of The Depths"book. What he and all the ones who survived the torpedo attack went through is unimaginable. What a brave man. He had the Lord with him. I thank him for writing this book. I heard stories of the Indianapolis, but not this in depth. Inside the book I have an inscription to "Bonnie Muellegger, Best to you" Semper Fi. Ed Harrell 27:1

Edgar's Speech Was Better
Craig Lanigan
February 1, 2025
I was blessed to be in the audience when Edgar spoke at a church near Arlington Heights in 2014. As great as Robert Shaw was in Jaws, playing a survivor of this historic ordeal, he doesn't compare to listening to this true survivor.
I was an Army Reservist serving on active duty for the 85th Support Command when the command put out the information that he was speaking near our headquarters. I could not believe it and eagerly went to see him after work. I wore my uniform to the event to give a sense of connection from past to present military service. He captivated all of us and brought me to tears when he raised his voice and proclaimed his fervent belief in God. He exuded passion. To think of all the people that reject God, who never experienced anything as traumatic as Edgar, and yet his faith remained resolute after such a horrific experience. Life is full of many memorable moments, and witnessing his unforgettable speech was one of my favorites.

All my condolences to the family of Mr Edgar Harrell.
I once had the honor to communicate with Mr Harrell, through several emails in May of 2014. He was kind enough to send me the “Out Of The Depth” video related to the sinking of the Indianapolis and his 4-1/2 days left floating at sea. A harrowing experience.
Mr Harrell and my father had a lot in common. My dad was Navy and with my own experience in the Navy from 71 to 77, marines and sailors are always together.
My father was aboard USS Louisville Heavy Cruiser CA-28. From March 1942 -1946, so Mr Harrell and my dad were Heavy Cruiser sea mates during WWII. MY dad would have been 102 years old now.
Our gratitude to Mr Edgar Harrell and all those that served, shall never cease for the sacrifice they made.
God bless America.

I am so sad he is gone. I told his story, and still do, every year to new Navy leaders. I have spoken with him, and even made the trip to Nashville area to attend church with Edgar. What an American treasure.

Edgar and his son David gave a presentation on Edgar's experience aboard the USS Indianapolis to retired federal employees in Oak Ridge TN on January 20, 2015. We didn't want him to stop telling his story even though our group only had a short commitment of time for the meeting. I brought two friends that had military service and all three of us bought his book and got personalized autographs. RIP and thank you for your service.

I had the extreme Honor to hear World War II Veteran and Survivor of the Sinking of the USS Indianapolis, Marine Sergeant Edgar Harrell in 2018 during Welcome Home Veterans Ceremonies at Old Glory Distillery help by AARP. His amazing story of the events that happened during the Sinking of the USS Indianapolis that was caused by being Torpedoed by a Japanese Submarine and was hit twice causing the ship to sink within 12 Minutes after being hit. His speaking about the events that happened after the almost 900 men that went into the Water and of the terrible losses of life to so so many was a Truly amazing Story and brought many tears to the eyes of many of the Veterans that were in Attendance that evening. I seen Mr. Edgar Harrell one day at the Waffle House Resturant on Madison Street one day recently and he was there with a very good friend of his and I had a Chance to shake his hand and tell him of how great that it was to be able to meet a Hero from World War 2 and of his Amazing story of Survival in Shark Invested Waters for almost 5 days before they were rescued. May you forever be Comforted by The Arms Of Jesus Christ.

Mr. Edgar Harrell my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Thank you for your service on the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis CA 35. I am glad they found the USS Indianapolis a few years ago so you could see that event. My dad (Enrico Trotta) who passed in 2017 at age 92 served on the USS Louisville CA 28 (near sister ship of Indy) from 1943-46 and witnessed (52) sailors and Rear Admiral Theodore Chandler buried at sea due to (3) kamikaze attacks in Pacific. You are part of the greatest generation. My dad & I met years ago a survivor in Center Line, MI who was on the USS Indianapolis too. It is great to talk to this veterans for only someone that was there could give accurate detail. God Bless you and your family!
