WILLIAM HOWARD Obituary

WILLIAM H. HOWARD, 89, of Charleston, WV, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2013 after a short illness. He was born July 26, 1924 in Bradford. A 1942 graduate of Bradford High School, Mr. Howard enlisted in the U.S. Navy upon graduation and served during WWII in the South Pacific. After his military service, he attended The Pennsylvania State University and earned a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering. He spent his entire professional career as an engineer for Columbia Gas System, from where he retired as President of Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation in Charleston, WV in 1987. Mr. Howard lived a long and healthy life, enjoying biking, hunting, traveling and Penn State home football games. He will be fondly remembered by his surviving family and friends: his sons, William W. Howard of St. Albans, WV and John L. Howard of Charleston, WV; his daughter Kathryn H. Swenson of Wake Forest, NC; two brothers, John G. Curtis of Granite Bay, CA and Richard E. Curtis of Depoe Bay, OR; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren and his companion, Betsy Maitland of Stuart, FL. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ester Curtis and her husband Elmer M. Curtis and his father, Harold W. Howard and his wife, Geraldine Wallace Howard. Friends are invited to call from 4:00-5:30, Friday, January 10, 2013 in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc., South Avenue. Graveside services will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, January 11, 2013 in Willow Dale Cemetery, with Rev. Stacey Fussell, Rector of the Church of the Ascension, officiating. A celebration of Bill's life will also be held over Memorial Day weekend at his camp, 'Howard's Hangout' which was built by Bill, his family and friends.
