Joan Margaret Kearney

JOAN MARGARET KEARNEY Joan Margaret Kearney, 79, of Vero Beach, passed away on March 11, 2013 at Kindred Hospital in Melbourne. She was born in New York City on July 28, 1933, and moved to Vero Beach from Whitestone, New York in 1996. Ms. Kearney was a graduate of Marymount High School and Marymount College in Manhattan. She began her career in business management with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), during its historic expansion in the 1950s as the world's leading contemporary art museum. In 1960, she joined the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (the "I Triple E"), where she applied her business skills to the world of scientific research. In 1964, Ms. Kearney was recruited by Columbia Pictures, where she brought her business acumen to the motion picture industry. She subsequently worked at Paramount Pictures and at Cadence Industries. In 1972, Ms. Kearney was selected by the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) as its national conference manager. Her keen business sense was of great benefit to this scientific and engineering organization as she traveled throughout the country on its behalf. In 1976, she relocated from Manhattan to Whitestone to begin her 20-year tenure as the office and benefits manager for the International Union of Operating Engineers - Local 14 and 14B, New York. Ms. Kearney retired from the union in 1996. She was a member of St. John of the Cross Roman Catholic Church in Vero Beach. Ms. Kearney is survived by her brother, Patrick J. Kearney, of Bayside, New York, eight nieces and nephews (including Suzanne D. Vorrath of Vero Beach), 19 grand nieces and nephews, and nine great-grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Maryanne Kearney Sirko and Catherine Kearney Nolan, both of Vero Beach. Friends may call from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Friday, March 15 at the Cox-Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home in Vero Beach. A Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 PM at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 16 at St. John of the Cross Church. Interment will follow at Crestlawn Cemetery in Vero Beach.
