Thomas (Tom) Shelton

Thomas Austin Shelton July 5, 1923 - October 9, 2012 Thomas (Tom) Shelton born in Fort Pierce to Thomas Austin and Bertie Dorman Shelton passed from this life on October 9th following a sudden illness. Tom lived in Miami, Florida during childhood and entered military service in the Army and later transferred to the Air Force culminating with retirement in The Air Force Reserve where he was awarded the Air Force Commendation and Defense Meritorious Service medals. As a civil servant, Tom served in Air Force intelligence with numerous duty stations within the Washington DC area. He graduated from Duke University, completed post- graduate studies at Georgetown University and later completed a Jurisdoctorate from American University. Tom married Laverne Askew in North Carolina in 1951 and they raised surviving children Tom III, Tobi and Betty Ann. He was an active member of the American Legion, Korean War Veterans, and also volunteered as a reader for the radio service for the blind at WQCS the local NPR station. A staunch supporter of freemasonry led to Worshipful Master, Scottish Rite and Shriner.Tom, also known for his passion for writing, authored several books including a book of original poetry Zest of Life. Tom retired to Port St. Lucie, Florida in 1999. His greatest joy was spending time with family and his four grandchildren. Tom was a deeply spiritual man and a member of the Port Saint Lucie First Presbyterian Church. Our spirits are lifted by the life he led and the love that Tom gave all of us. A memorial service will be held at Harbor Place Independent Living Multi-Purpose Room on Saturday Nov 17th at 2:00 PM.
