Frederick Brofos Obituary

Frederick A. Brofos, 80, died Nov. 28, 2008, at the Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach. He was born in London and moved to Vero Beach 15 years ago, coming from Warner, N.H. He worked for the Allied Psychological Warfare Group as a translator. In 1946, he attended Washington University in St. Louis, graduating with a degree in fine arts. He served in the Army at Governor's Island during the Korean War. Afterward, he worked at the National Archives and ITT as an archivist. In 1961, he moved to Warner, where he focused on philatelic writing and published hundreds of articles and books on Scandinavian and American postal history. For this work, he was elected to be an honorary life member of the Scandinavian Collectors Club; The National Philatelic Society, London; and of the Friends of the Norwegian Railroad Museum. He was editor for 10 years of "The Posthorn," the bimonthly journal of the Scandinavian Collectors Club. He was invited to be a signatory to the Roll of Fame of the Cinderella Club of Great Britain and was awarded the Gold Medal of the Norwegian Postal Museum. He was elected to the Writers Hall of Fame of the American Philatelic Society and received the Order of the Silver Lion from the Norwegian Philatelic Federation and the prestigious Anderssen-Dethloff gold medal. Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Rosemary Brofos of Vero Beach; son, Alexander Brofos of Hoptkinton, N.H.; stepsons, Scott Ossenfort of Vero Beach and Kevin Ossenfort of Middleburg; daughter, Alecia Blazei of San Carlos, Calif.; sister, Fleur Assmuesun of Fredensborg, Denmark; and two grandsons. Memorial contributions may be made to the VNA/Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960. SERVICES: Will be private.
