I was just thinking about some positive influences in my life and wondered whatever happened to Mr. Varone? And Google sadly led me here. I worked for Mr. Varone while a student at Forest Hills H. S. For three years, I helped him in his office, taking phone calls, filing papers, etc. He was a kind, no-nonsense person who I admired for his honesty and work ethic. He never mentioned his Army service, but based on his “buzz cut” hair cut and disciplined approach, it is no surprise. I am glad to see he lived a long life and left behind a wife, children, and grandchildren. My heart and prayers goes out to them. Mr. Varone made a very positive influence on me when I was in high school and he will live on in my memory forever.

I only have fond memories of Mr. Varone from my time at Forest Hills High School. I'm glad he lived such a long, full life. I hope his memory is a blessing for his family always.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any mans death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.

Joe, it was pleasure knowing you during my time at FHHS. You were a great teacher, coach, mentor and life example. Never knew you were a war hero Joe, but that was the kind of guy you were. God Speed, you are now safe in the arms of Jesus.
