WALTER LAGERQUIST Obituary

WALTER W. LAGERQUIST, 89, of Vero Beach, FL passed away peacefully on September 17, 2013 at The Place in Vero Beach. He is survived by his loving wife Ellen, his sons Walter M. of Netherlands, Bruce of Seattle, WA, David (Kim) of Lk Orion, MI and grandchildren Hunter & Paige. Walter was born in Evanston, IL on December 14, 1923 and had been a resident of Vero Beach for 26 years coming from Drayton Plains, MI. He attended public school in Yonkers and Hastings-On-Hudson, NY and graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Kings Point, NY with a Bachelor's of Science degree, a third Officer's Certificate and an Officer's Commission in the U.S. Naval Reserve. After several voyages across the Atlantic, in the Merchant Marine, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1944, as a deck officer on an attack transport, where he saw extensive service during WWII in the Pacific. He was discharged from the Navy in 1946, with the rank of Lieutenant. He received BA & MA degrees in Economics from George Washington University in Washington, DC. He worked in the field of employee benefits retiring from The Watson Wyatt Company in 1985. Walter was a member on the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Vero Beach. He volunteered for the Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County. He enjoyed working in the yard, traveling, and reading. There will be a gathering of friends in Michigan at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the UUFVB, 1590 27th Avenue, Vero Beach, FL 32960 or the VNA Hospice 1110 35th Lance, Vero Beach, FL 32960.
