Brian O'Connell Obituary

Brian A. O'Connell, 70

Worcester - Brian A. O'Connell, 70, a member of the city's School Committee for the past 36 years, died Friday, October 18, 2019 in Worcester.

Brian dedicated the majority of his life to the improvement of public education in Worcester.

Brian was born in Worcester, the son of the late Andrew J. and Ireen P. (Bergin) O'Connell. His father was a dean and longtime member of the faculty at Worcester Academy and his mother was a public school principal in Leicester.

Brian grew up on the campus of Worcester Academy and graduated there in 1967. In recent years, he has lived on Union Hill only a few blocks from Worcester Academy.

Brian also graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1971 with honors and Harvard Law School in 1974.

After law school, he commuted for several years to Boston from Worcester where he served as a Law Clerk for Chief Justice Andrew A. Caffrey of the U.S. District Court and practiced law with a large law firm, Gaston Snow & Ely Bartlett.

With little interest in corporate law, Brian shifted in 1982 to the general practice of law in a small Worcester firm and began his full-time commitment to his home city.

In 1983, he ran successfully for the Worcester School Committee and has devoted infinite hours to his passion for education ever since. Through his school committee work and his expanding expertise with education and municipal laws, he later began to take limited administrative positions with local governments and public school systems where he could share his special knowledge.

Despite a successful professional life and many other interests, Brian's highest priority over the last 36 years has remained the Worcester School Committee and the Worcester Public Schools. He was first elected in 1983 after a recount and has been the top vote getter many times since. He is the longest serving member of the Worcester School Committee in the city's history. He worked successfully and cooperatively with five different school superintendents and nine different mayors. His achievements on the committee have shaped public education in Worcester for the benefit of tens of thousand of students, and thousands of teachers.

Brian's interest in the value of quality education went beyond the Worcester Public Schools. He actively participated in the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, serving as president of that organization in 1998, and played a role in the passage of the state's 1993 Education Reform Act. He was a former member of the Governor's Advisory Committee on Local Government and the Massachusetts Education Reform Review Commission.

Brian was a former Young Alumni Trustee of the College of the Holy Cross, served as President of the college's Alumni Association and on the board of the Holy Cross Club of Greater Worcester. He received the college's In Hoc Signo Award in 2013. He has been a trustee at Worcester Academy since 1976, served as President of the school's Alumni Association, and was inducted into the Worcester Academy Hall of Fame earlier this year. He was also a trustee of Anna Maria College in Paxton, and a former board member of the Worcester Educational Development Foundation.

Brian was a longtime member of St. John's Parish where he was a lector and member of the Parish Council. He was a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

Brian was a founding member of the Worcester St. Patrick's Parade Committee, and a supporter of countless other community organizations.

Brian leaves many cousins including twin cousins Mary Eichholz and Eleanor Menard, James, Dennis, and Edward Bergin, Ellen Brigham, Shelia Faneuff, Martha Sarmieato, Marie Miller, Marion Vancelette, John Bergin, Margaret Shivick, David and Francis Bergin, Ann Reno, Thomas Bergin, and Joseph Bergin Jr.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, October 24, at 10 a.m. in St. John's Church, 40 Temple St., Worcester. Burial with his parents will be in St. Roch's Cemetery in Oxford. Calling hours are Wednesday, October 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Brian's memory are suggested to St. John's Church, 40 Temple St., Worcester, MA 01604, Worcester Academy, 81 Providence St., Worcester, MA 01604 or the Worcester Educational Development Foundation, 210 Park Ave., Worcester, MA 01609.

I met Brian as a first year law student at Harvard Law School, and will always remember his kind and gentle manner and his longish floppy hair that he was always brushing out of his eyes. The hair appears to be long gone, but his kind and gentle manner obviously lived on. So did his strong faith and his love for Worchester, which he shared with me on a weekend visit to his parents' lodgings at Worchester Academy. Enjoy your well-earned rest, Brian; we'll meet again!

Brian was so vibrant that it is hard to believe is gone. He was very smart, kind, and generous to others. I remember visiting him at his Lake Spencer house in one afternoon. On that day, he had already hiked and written a book review for publication. Yet, he was relaxed and ready to give his visitors his full attention. Needless to say, he beat everyone when we played games, though he was not competitive. He was a true Renaissance man who knew a lot about practically everything, but never made anyone feel less than important. He was truly one of the greatest men I have ever met and the world is a bit dimmer now that he is gone.

I was saddened to hear about Brian's passing. While employed at the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, I had the opportunity to work with Brian for many years. He was a dedicated Board member. His integrity, professionalism and devotion to public education was to be admired. My sincere sympathy to the family and friends.

Worcester has indeed lost a staunch supporter of education and a genuine human being. I taught at the Worcester Adult Learning Center for 40 years and Brian was always there being a committed supporter. He was always at our graduations giving our students encouragement and respect they deserved. I will always remember his smile and caring . handshake. I hope the people involved with education will take up his cause of good, relevant education for all. I just recently moved to Portland OR and one of the people I thought I would miss was Brian at a cafe or a yard sale:), but now there are many who will miss this wonderful man. Thank you Brian

Sincerely,

Brian was my cousin and although I moved out of New England over 40 years ago I do remember him from my youth when I would see him at family events such as the annual Bergin Christmas party. He would also on occasion come over to visit us and spend the afternoon with us. My recollection of Brian as a youth is many of the same qualities that many have mentioned in their tributes to him. He was kind, thoughtful, smart, always interested in what you had to say and of course always welcomed you with that smile. These are qualities in my youth I may not have appreciated as much as I should have but certainly do now. I'm glad to see he wasn't overly hardened by our world and was able to maintain these qualities throughout his life. He was certainly a gentle soul and we need more gentle souls in our world. As many have said, the Worcester Schools are a better place because of him as is all the other organizations he was involved in, I too think I'm a better person for having crossed paths with Brian and honored and proud he was part of our family

We were privileged to have met Brian when he clerked for our father, Andrew A. Caffrey, in Boston. Little did we know that our paths would once again cross as we became residents of Worcester, MA. Sending our three children to Worcester Public Schools allowed us to rekindle a friendship honored and shared by our beloved parents years prior. A true gentleman, scholar, advocate and friend, Brian will forever bring a smile to our faces and remain in our hearts forever. May the choirs of Angels come to greet you, Brian.

Brian, May you Rest In Peace. You are certainly going to be missed. You did so much for our students in the Worcester Public Schools, and created opportunities for all of us who graduated from the system. This is a massive loss for Worcester, especially its teachers, students, parents, and leaders. Brian was the voice of reason, a true gentleman who "achieved the honorable" and lived to serve others. If anyone earned a place in heaven, it is Brian O'Connell. RIP dear friend.

I will always cheerish the many conversations we shared over the years, especially at my little league opening day. His commitment to serving the needs of our public school children will never be replaced. I was so grateful for your guidance when I let you know my oldest daughter wanted to attend WA.
May God Bless your family & so many friends in these difficult times and may you Rest In Peace, where we know through our faith in the Lord we all will be united one day.
