John McAuliffe Obituary

Dr. John E. McAuliffe

WORCESTER - Dr. John E. McAuliffe, proud World War II Battle of the Bulge veteran and historian, dentist, poet, brother, uncle, friend, and all-around great guy, died on Monday, December 9, 2019 after ninety-six years of a life well lived.

John was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 6, 1923, the son of Florence and Virginia Hebert McAuliffe, and moved to Worcester, his father's hometown, following the early deaths of his parents. John loved Worcester and was one of the City's greatest boosters. He graduated from Mt. St. Charles Academy, Woonsocket, RI in 1941 and from the College of the Holy Cross in 1944.

John served in the US Army as a combat infantryman with Company M, 347th Regiment of the 87th Infantry Division, 3rd Army, and fought with the Greatest Generation in "Patton's Army" in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns, earning the Combat Infantryman Badge and three Campaign Stars, the Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal, the German Occupation Medal, and the Belgian Croix de Guerre. He always remembered that winter spent in the Ardennes Forest surrounded by the enemy, fighting and sleeping in over a foot of snow, as the coldest of his life. His Battle of the Bulge comrades are this week returning to Europe to mark the Battle's seventy-fifth anniversary that began on December 16th, a trip John had hoped to make.

After graduating from Georgetown University Dental School in 1950, he joined the US Army Dental Corps as a 1st Lieutenant. He served as the Post Dental Surgeon at Ft. McNair, Washington, D.C., during the Korean War. He then practiced dentistry in Worcester for thirty-six years, also serving as Chairman of the Worcester Public Schools Dental Clinic and with the Apollonian Guild of Dentists caring for underprivileged children. He served as President of the St. Paul's Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Following John's retirement, he turned to joining and serving other veterans. He was an active member of numerous veterans' organizations, serving as President and Commander of many and was often named Veteran or Person of the Year. He was a Trustee of the WWI Memorial at Lincoln Square and was appointed to the Worcester WWII Memorial Committee. He was presented with the Key to the City of Worcester in 2012 and was a frequent featured speaker on WWII at local schools and at Memorial Day and Veterans Day services. John was committed to honoring the sacrifices made by all veterans and to teaching about WWII by sharing his experiences firsthand. John also made multiple tours of the WWII European battlefields in Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany and was honored by the Belgian government.

John, a gifted athlete, was an avid golfer and Holy Cross sports fan. As the son and grandson of sculptors, he dabbled in sculpturing. He was a kind, humble, generous man who nurtured his friendships. One was always glad to see him and left his company feeling uplifted. He credited his faith for sustaining him through life's challenges. His joyful spirit will be missed.

John is survived by his sister Mary V. Rothaupt of Monsey, New York and his beloved nieces and nephews, Dr. Jo-Anne O. Shepard and her husband William, Deborah A. O'Malley, Patricia A. O'Malley, Timothy J. O'Malley, Elizabeth A. Murphy and her husband Timothy, John J. O'Malley, Jr. and his wife Jenifer, Stephen Rothaupt and his wife Darlene, Peter Rothaupt, Mary Ellen Riello and her husband Anthony, and Katherine Carpentier and her husband Lawrence, as well as many great nieces and nephews who adored him and describe him as "the best guy ever." John was predeceased by his former wife, May Elliott, his brothers Francis J. and William F. McAuliffe, his cherished sister Anne T. O'Malley, and brothers-in-law John J. O'Malley and George Rothaupt.

John also leaves his devoted caretaker, companion and friend, Geraldine Thompson, who helped make his last years active, happy and full.

In lieu of flowers, as a tribute to John's goodness, his family suggests that you take someone you love to lunch or dinner and let them know that you love them.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, December 13, 2019 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster Street, Worcester, MA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant Street, Worcester, MA. A private burial will take place at a later date.

Just learned of Mr. McAuliffes death. He helped me many years ago to find the unit my father was in during the Battle of the Bulge. He sent me books and other artifacts about the Bulge that was priceless to me. What a gentleman I felt like I was with my father when I talked to him. Thank you Mr. McAuliffe for your devotion to God and Country. I will never forget you and other veterans such as my father. You were what it means for us to understand the Greatest Generation, I salute you

Sadly, I just learned of John's passing today in Henderson, Nv. My name brought to the attention of the Historical News keeper for the Battle of the Bulge Veteran's. I am the 2nd cousin of John E. McAuliffe and his siblings. My father, Francis Russell McAuliffe and John were 1st cousins; each of their fathers were brothers. I shared many wonderful conversations of WWII with John and when I worked as the Exec Asst to **The Adjutant General for the Nv National Guard I traced a link mentioned by one of the retired Army Soldiers. He, Mr. James Inman, and John were Comrades in the Battle of the Bulge in the same division. I put them in contact with each other. I loved every minute of John's stories and he shared with me a copy drawing of his Army boots that his brother Frank drew when John returned from the war. I am saddened by his death but know that he was an example of living life to the fullest! Blessings and condolences to the family. Love, Mary McAuliffe, daughter of Francis Russell McAuliffe.

John,

You were from the Greatest Generations. I will always remember Fort Indiantown Gap and the Battle of the Bulge reenactments and trips to Europe.

May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. May God hold you gently in the palm of his hands.

Dr. McAuliffe was a wonderful gentleman. I worked as his dental assistant from 1966 to 1968. I NEVER knew of his service and heroism. He was very meek and well mannered. When my brother died in Viet Nam in 1967 he was so very kind and attentive to me and my family . . . BECAUSE HE TOO WAS A HERO ! Thank you Dr. McAuliffe for all of your kindness to me and the great memories I have of being in your employ. Enjoy your New Home.

Deepest sympathy to John's family and friends. I had the privilege of meeting John in 1999 at a reunion of the 87th Infantry Division and have many happy memories from other reunions with him and his comrade George Watson. He was a historian about the Battle of the Bulge of WWII and always willing to share his stories. He will be missed by many.

John is with his Lord and without pain and suffering. This has been hard to acknowledge as he fought so hard to be alive and attentive to this precious life we live. Although I only knew him as the dentist who gave me a root canal over 40 yrs ago, my sister Geraldine has kept me and my sisters in tune to all the times that they spent together, savoring all the events and other things that make life worth so much. I can honestly say that she enjoyed being with John and making sure that all his needs were met. I know John because of her sharing with us the great and wonderful adventures that they had. I am so grateful that she had this time with Him and learned so much about our country, the armed forces and the integrity of our WW2 veterans. I am also so grateful that his family spent time with him and made him feel loved and important. What a gift. The most important thing I know is that John was a delight to our Savior Jesus Christ for setting an example of dedication and worth for all of us to embrace. God take good care of him, He is missed.

I had the pleasure of working with John at the Worcester Art Museum, in the 1990's, when he was there as a part-time Gallery Attendant. I was also happy to see him marching with some of his fellow Battle of the Bulge comrades in Worcester's Veterans Day parades over the years.

Of the Greatest Generation he survived the Battle of the Buldge while serving in WWII. Not ever forgetting his fellow veterans. I'll never meet a finer man to share a beer, his beer, Orval, in awe of what a kind, generous man he was. He came home to a career taking care of others as well.
Rest in Peace, sir. We got this now.
