Joanne Bailey Reitzel

Boylston - Joanne Bailey Reitzel, 92, formerly of Boylston, MA died peacefully at Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, Worcester, MA, on December 20, 2018.

Joanne is survived by her sister, Lenette B. Richardson of Bedford, VA ; five children, including Evelina Okerstrom of New Smyrna Beach, FL., Elizabeth Lamb of Barre, MA, Lili V. Reitzel of Portland, OR, Elias Reitzel of Portland, OR and Nicolas Martin Reitzel III of Shutesbury, MA. In addition, she had eight grandchildren and eight great-grand-children. She was predeceased by her husband Nicolas Martin Reitzel and sister Emma Lou Krick.

Josie, as she was known to her family and friends, was born on November 2, 1926 in Philadelphia, PA to Rear Admiral (Ret) Leonard Scott Bailey and Emilie F. Hahn. She was an avid traveler and artist. She took many watercolor classes at the Worcester Art Museum and had a solo show at the Museum of her watercolor pictures. She was a pioneering businesswoman. Josie with her husband, Nicolas, was the Owner of Reitzel Associates, a successful water testing and environmental laboratory in Boylston, MA. In addition, she was the first woman registered well driller in Massachusetts. She was active in the New England Well Drillers Association.

Josie was well known for promoting higher education, and mentored many budding artists and musicians. She often opened her home to exchange students and people in need.

She also enjoyed gardening, reading, classical music, politics and the Red Sox. Since her life spanned most of a century, Josie experienced and appreciated many historic changes and events in her lifetime and will be missed by her family.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at the Worcester Friends Meeting at 901 Pleasant Street, Worcester, MA 01602, on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at 10 am.
