North Brookfield - Richard "Dick" Paul McEvoy was killed by a suicide bomber on Friday August 22, 2015 at the age of 57. He was working as a Program Manager with defense contractor DynCorp International in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Richard was born on June 24, 1958 and grew up in North Brookfield, MA. He attended North Brookfield High School, where he was the "top male student" of his graduating class, and then received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. After his commission at West Point as an infantry officer, Richard served 28 years in the army during which he became an exemplary commander and leader. His army career included time in Special Forces, Ranger School, and Airborne School. Among his numerous military awards and achievements, Richard earned two bronze stars while deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. He retired from the army as a colonel in 2008 and started working as a government contractor for DynCorp International. During his time with DynCorp, Richard managed programs in Iraq and Afghanistan mentoring and training the local military as well as police forces. He earned the Valor Award after his heroic actions during an attack on his camp in Afghanistan on July 2, 2013. When receiving the Valor Award, Richard was described as a "great leader" who "was so focused on others, that the team had to remind him to eat. The team had to remind him to sleep. But no one had to remind him to lead."

Richard married his wife Kathleen (Murphy) McEvoy on May 28, 1983. They had two children, Michelle and Patrick McEvoy. Richard was a dedicated, loving husband and father who enjoyed traveling with his family and trips back home to Massachusetts to visit extended family and friends. He was a life-long athlete who loved the outdoors.

Richard is also survived by his mother Janice Proctor, father Charles McEvoy Sr., and siblings Luann Varney, Charles McEvoy, Joseph McEvoy, and Craig McEvoy, as well as nephews Jacob McEvoy, Brandon McEvoy, Christopher Varney, Matthew Folkes, Adam Folkes, Brandon Murphy, and Colin Murphy.

The wake for Richard will be held on Friday, September 11, 2015 from 1-3pm and 6-8pm. in Pillsbury Funeral Home 44 Gilbert St. North Brookfield, MA.. The funeral service will be held on Saturday September 12th with a Mass at 1:00PM in St. Joseph's Church 296 N. Main St. N. Brookfield, MA. Richard's burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
