Walter Johnson Obituary
Walter H. Johnson

Chatham, MA - Walter H. "Skip" Johnson of Chatham, MA, formerly of Manchester CT and Worcester MA, passed away on January 9th 2018. He was 79.

Born in Worcester, he was the son of the late Carl Harry Johnson of Holden, MA and Helen (Anderson) Graves of Boylston, MA. His wife Karen (Borg) predeceased him in 2016. Walter, known as Skip to his friends, graduated from Worcester Poly Technical Institute with a degree in engineering in 1961. He graduated as the honor cadet from the school's ROTC program and later spent 2 years in the Army honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant. He spent his entire working career with Pratt & Whitney, East Hartford, CT as an engineer, eventually moving to the United Technologies Division of United Fuel Cells before retiring to Cape Cod. Skip was a tireless and lifelong advocate for the homeless. As an active member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Manchester CT, he spearheaded the church's participation in the Manchester Area Conference of Churches. He spent over 25 years and countless hours organizing and recruiting volunteers for the Manchester Homeless Shelter. Skip spent many a night and holiday staying overnight or serving meals. When he and Karen retired to Chatham, MA, in 1999, the couple became active members of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Chatham. Skip soon found his nitch and continued his work on behalf of the homeless on Cape Cod. He became a full time volunteer and a part-time employee at Homeless Prevention Council (HPC), Orleans, MA. His dedication and commitment to the organization will have a lasting impact for years to come. Skip developed a statistical program that tracked, quantified and categorized the demographics of those being served by HPC. These statistics proved invaluable to the organization allowing it to extend its outreach and develop new programs. Donors, grantors and other philanthropic organizations better understand the mission of HPC because of Skip's work.

He is survived by his three sons, John and his wife Donna of North Port, FL; Christopher of Tolland, CT; and Erik and his wife Stephanie of South Windsor CT. A sister, Karin Howe of Northboro MA; five grandchildren and three great granddaughters. He was predeceased by his brother Norman. The family would like to thank members of the Chatham Fire and Rescue department for their support and kindness shown to Skip.

A memorial service will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in Skip's memory may be made to the Homeless Prevention Council or the Chatham Fire and Rescue Department.
