While it has been some years since I had last seen Joe, he left an indelible impression on me, having gotten to know Joe during my clerkship with Judge Merritt some years ago. Joe's kindness and helpfulness will never be forgotten, and I am saddened by the news of his passing. Please accept my most profound condolences on the loss of a good man and a good soul. In sympathy--

I am terribly saddened by the news of Joe's passing. Countless times over the years he took time to help me at the federal court library. He was always gracious, cheerful, and interested in my life and my law practice. He has been missed since he left Nashville. He was a gift to us all. I am saddened by his family's loss, but certain he left them with wonderful memories.
