Pamela Johnson Obituary

Pamela Joy Johnson

Nashville - Pamela Joy Johnson, a daughter of Nashville, a lover of the arts, a woman who cherished her family and friends, died on September 10, 2018.

In 2007, Pamela returned to Nashville from Los Angeles, and promptly put her talents to work serving a wide range of Nashville's arts and educational institutions.

Pamela served as Director of University Marketing at Belmont University, and while there persuaded the Commission on Presidential Debates to host one of the 2008 debates between John McCain and Barack Obama at the university, giving Belmont students a unique opportunity to experience national politics. She became the Vice President of Development for the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and led a successful capital campaign. Before retiring, she joined the staff of OZ Arts at its founding and had the pleasure of helping to present cutting-edge contemporary performing art.

Pamela's career took her to Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, San Antonio and New York, where she founded a marketing and communications firm, bringing major corporations together with cultural organizations. Over her career, she held senior positions in a wide range of cultural organizations, including the Smithsonian Institution and the Getty Trust .

An active volunteer, Pamela joined the boards the Economic Club of Nashville and the Nashville Repertory Theatre. In recognition of her contributions to Nashville's cultural life, the theatre awarded Pamela its 2018 Applause Award. Pamela took comfort in her faith, nurtured by her childhood membership in Belmont Heights Baptist Church.

Pamela Johnson is survived by her parents, Bill and Elizabeth Scott Johnson, her aunt Maxine Scott Wright, her uncles Dr. Ralph Johnson and Dr. Larry Johnson, their wives Charlotte and Rebecca, and her large and loving family in Jackson, Tennessee. Her many friends and those she championed will miss her kindness and love of life, her good company and her passion to bring the arts closer to everyone's daily life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in her memory be made to the Nashville Repertory Theatre, and the Cultural Assistance Program at the Economic Club.

Pamela's life will be celebrated at a service of remembrance at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, at 3900 West End Avenue, Nashville, on Saturday September 15, 2018 at 11am.

The service will be preceded by visitation on Friday evening, September 14, from 6:00 -8:00pm and on Saturday morning, September 15, from 9:30 - 10:45am.

We came to know and love Pam when she worked at the Witte Museum in San Antonio some decades ago. She was a bright light both professionally and socially. I'm heartsick she left us too early, but she had certainly crammed the best practices of life into her foreshortened existence. Godspeed, Pam. I miss you from way down here in Texas.
