Richard Cart Obituary

Richard Ray Cart

IOTA - Richard Ray Cart passed away early Wednesday morning at his home in Crowley. He was 93. Along with his wife, Beatrix, he raised 8 children who love, honor, and respect his memory.

He started his life journey in Iota on December 1, 1919 and his fondest memories are of the people and places there. In his later years he wrote for Iota News as Rockin' R and helped to create the Iota First (IF) Club to promote and cherish this wonderful place.

He graduated from St. Francis in Iota and went on to the big town of Baton Rouge to attend LSU. He was a life-long fan of the LSU Tigers and proudly claimed to be part of the student body who purchased the first 'Mike the Tiger' - each student putting in 25 cents.

He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and served as a pilot training the First Special Service Force paratroopers in Helena, Montana. He was well-respected and requested by generals to fly them where ever they needed to go. He received an honorable discharge with the rank of Major and moved back to Louisiana to continue in civilian life.

He worked as an insurance adjuster for Farm Bureau, as a car salesman for Shetler Ford, and opened a tire store in Lafayette. His most successful 'job' ,by far, was raising 8 children, putting them through Catholic school, and giving them a good foundation on which to build their lives.

He lived a long life full of family, friends, and travel. He was involved in many activities before and after his retirement. He and his wife traveled extensively to many parts of the United States and Canada where he made many friends and spread the Cajun culture of love and laughter. He never missed a chance to attend numerous military reunions with his former colleagues.

He was a past member of the St. Michael Men's Choir, a member of the Red Stick Winnies Winnebago club, a past president of the First Special Services Association, co-founder, past president, and member of the Iota First Club

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Beatrix LeBlanc Cart and their eight children. These include Michelle Cart Akers and her husband Toby, Richard Paul Cart and his fiancée' Josie, Bruce Anthony Cart and his wife Lynda, Maggie Cart Metzler and her husband John, Mary Cart LaPointe, Claire Cart Lawyer, Christopher Joseph Cart and his wife Yvonne, and Kelly Cart Leonards and her husband Jude. He is also loved and remembered by his 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 3 great great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Davoust Cart and Rose Sonnier Cart and his 5 brothers and sisters: Albert Bernard Cart, Ernestine Cart Beard, Isabelle Cart David, Ruby Cart Ader, and Willie Leonard Cart. He also joins his grandson, Matthew Paul LaPointe.

The family of Mr. Cart would like to thank all family and friends for their support and love. Special thanks to Rosa Thomas Clement, his caretaker in his final years, his good friend Mr. Wayne Melvin, and his nephew, Joel "Joe" Cart, who faithfully attended to his needs.

We would also like to thank the wonderful people of Lamm Home Health and Family Choice Care for their support and concern.

Funeral arrangements are through Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home in Iota. Visitation will start Friday, March 22nd from 10 AM until 8 PM with a rosary at 6:00 PM, and will continue Saturday morning from 9 AM until 12 noon. Funeral services will be held Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iota at 1:00 PM. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
