LAFAYETTE - Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM in La Chapelle de Martin & Castille in Lafayette for Bernice "Toot" Romero Black, age 85, who died Tuesday evening, September 19, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Lafayette. Reverend Dustin Dought, Pastor of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, will officiate the services. Lectors will be Brandi Royer and Lynne Hoffpauir.

Survivors include one son, Tony Black and his wife, Liz; two daughters, Gwen Martin and her husband, Dwain, and Lynne Hoffpauir and her husband, Dale; two adopted daughters, Shawn Stokley and Marcella Blanchet; four grandchildren, April Bethany and her husband, Jason, Brandi Royer and her husband, Dustin, Heather Darby and her husband, Cody, and Jake Gravouia and his fiancee', Sherell Alleman; three step grandsons, Cody, Kurt and Kyle Morvant,; five great grandchildren, Preslee Bethany, Easton Bethany, Brooklyn Darby, Wesley Gravouia and Stella Royer; and one adopted great grandchild, Peyton Stokley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jewel Ross "J. R." Black; her parents, Dudley and Stella Touchet Romero; one son-in-law, Kipp R. Johnson; brother and sister in law, Durias "Neg" and Fredia Romero and one nephew, Brian Romero.

Bernice was a native of Coteau, LA and a resident of Lafayette for the majority of her life. She was an active member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church and was a Eucharistic Minister at Church and with the Homebound as well as Lafayette General Medical Center. Bernice loved to paint and volunteered her time at Amelia Manor Nursing Home.

A Rosary will be prayed by Mr. Emile Babin Thursday at 6:30 PM in the funeral home.

The family would like to express their appreciation to staff and caregivers at Cedar Crest/Colonial Oaks Assisted Living and to Acadian Hospice(LHC) for the wonderful care given to Bernice. Special heartfelt thanks, as well, to her sitters, Jackie, Laura, Kat, Darlene and Janice, who took wonderful loving care of Momma.

Memorial contributions in Bernice's name may be made to Cedar Crest/Colonial Oaks Assisted Living or to Acadian Hospice(LHC).

Pallbearers will be Dwain Martin, Dale Hoffpauir, Jake Gravouia, Jason Bethany, Dustin Royer and Cody Darby. Honorary pallbearers will be Easton Bethany and Wesley Gravouia.

The family will be receiving friends at Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN location on Thursday from Noon until 8:00 PM and on Friday from 8:00 until time of the services.
