Jerry Nugent

Lafayette - A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Nouvelle Church of the Nazarene on Merchants Boulevard in Lafayette for Jerry Lamar Nugent, 77. Mr. Nugent passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2018, at his home in Youngsville, LA. He had been ill for quite some time with congestive heart failure.

A native of Lafayette, Jerry was born on April 26, 1941, and attended Lafayette High School and USL. He later served in the U.S. Army, during which time he was stationed at Baumholder Army Base in Germany. Following his military service, Jerry returned to Lafayette to raise a family with his former wife of 41 years, Lynn. During this time and until his passing, he was self-employed, co-owning oilfield equipment and drill pipe businesses, including NST Corp. and Holly Pipe Corp. in Lafayette.

From his youth, Jerry enjoyed participating in sports, such as baseball and track & field. As a young adult he became a long-distance runner, even qualifying for the Boston Marathon. He also became an avid outdoorsman, and it was his love for fishing, hunting, and boating that led him to build a family camp on the Atchafalaya River near Butte La Rose. All who knew him well knew that the camp was his favorite place on Earth.

Mr. Nugent was preceded in death by his father and mother, Philip M. and Helen Harper Nugent of Lafayette, and one daughter, Paige Hensley Miller, of Leesville.

Hensley of Scott; as well as one son-in-law, Anthony "Tony" Miller of Leesville. Jerry is also survived by his brother and sister, Phil H. Nugent of Sugarland, TX, and Joy Dale Nugent Kessel and her husband, James, of Friendswood, TX.

Mr. Nugent, or "PawPaw Jerry" as he was known, is survived by six grandchildren: Thomas Hensley of Carencro; Christina Hensley Dominguez and her husband, Ovidio, of Lafayette; Marley and Dylan St. Aubin of Centennial, CO; Jerry "Jay" Nugent, III, and Julianne Nugent of Lafayette; as well as two great-grandchildren: Vayda and Graham Hensley, children of Thomas Hensley and fiancée, Chalyn Lae.
