Lafayette, LA - Funeral services will be held Thursday March 6, 2014, 1:00 PM, Trinity CME Church, 604 Lee Ave. Visitation will be held from 5:00-9:00 PM on Wednesday March 5 at Kinchen Funeral Home, Inc., 1011 N St Antoine St, Lafayette LA, and Thursday morning from 10:00 AM until time of service at Trinity CME Church. She will be buried in the Church Cemetery.

Our dearly beloved Sister Ruth White Jones Brooks, departed this life on Friday, February 28, 2014. She is now at rest with God, rejoicing in His Heavenly Home.

Ruth was born on August 20, 1916 in Conroe, Texas to the union of Rev. Lonnie W. White and Alberta Nichols White. As an infant, she was baptized in the C. M. E. Church and received her religious training there, as well.. She received her high school education from Paul Breaux High School and later graduated from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA where she received the Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in biology and chemistry. After graduation, she was hired as a science teacher at Paul Breaux High School. Her students ranked highest among the greats. She was also the renowned girls' basketball coach. After games, she shared her home with Paul Breaux students who lived too far to return home. After retirement from the LPSS, she joined the staff at SMILE (St. Martin, Iberia and Lafayette Parishes) as Coordinator of Community Services. As the daughter of a pastor and later presiding elder, Ruth received her religious training. She loved her church--The Christian Methodist Church, where she served at all levels. At Trinity, she sang in the church choirs, served as President of the Missionary Society (local & regional); served as delegate to the CME General Conferences, President of the Stewardess Board (Local & Regional); chaired Women's Day, later Men's and Women's Day, where her goal was always reached. Mrs. Brooks was affiliated with many organizations. Some of these were Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Order of Easter Stars, Lafayette Mardi Gras Asso., (founder), Retired Teachers Asso., Southern University Alumni Asso., LaFinesse, Juste Nous Bridge Clubs and Board Member Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Inc.

Mrs. Brooks is survived by her sister and her husband Zerelene and Isaac Jones of Lafayette, LA, two nieces and one nephew as well as other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers and one sister.
