I happened to speak with John by phone a couple of months ago, after having virtually no communication for over 40 years. His death therefore came as a complete shock to me--I had looked forward to getting together in the months to come. What an incredibly great guy to grow up with--the times we enjoyed together in our teenage years were unbelievable, so I guess I best not share them. A wonderful person has died way before his time.

John was very entertaining and could give some terrific presentations on his notable ancestors, including Admiral Raphael Semmes (of whom he was very proud). We will miss you John.

I had not seen John Edgar in more than forty years but I have good memories of him. John Edgar was curious about everything, he had read broadly and deeply about many subjects, and had lived a life of rich experience, even at a young age. You could say that John Edgar was a polymath in the best sense of that word but he never made a big deal out of it. His father was one of my professors at Memphis State, one who was a good influence on me in my student days. Indeed, you could say genius and the joy for life were strong in the Edgars. John Edgar had a strong does of the best qualities a human being could have. He was fun and uplifting to be around.

You were one of my very best students at LSU over 30 years ago. Very creative. You added much to the beauty of our world.

My family was blessed to know the Edgars. We lived down the street from them on the Memphis State Campus. We have many wonderful memories of John and Mary and Anne. Our thought s and prayers are with the Edgar family..Betty, Allson and Beth Brown
