Basil Clovis Hendry Sr.

HENDRY SR., BASIL CLOVIS Basil Clovis Hendry Sr. died at 7:30 a.m. Friday, June 4, 2004, at his home at the age of 85. He was born April 4, 1919, a native of Amite and a resident of Baton Rouge. Visiting will be at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Visiting at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church from 9 a.m. until religious service at 10 a.m. Monday, conducted by the Rev. Vic Messina. Entombment in Greenoaks Memorial Park. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Saizan Hendry; and a son, Gary Gene Hendry. He is survived by a son, Basil Clovis "Tookie" Hendry Jr.; a daughter, Susan Hendry Hogan; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was a retired chairman of the board of Clovis Hendry Industries Inc. and former president of the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association, the first Southerner elected to that office. He was former president of the Baton Rouge Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association and co-author of "The Architectural Sheet Metal Manual," recognized internationally as the "bible" of the trade. He was director of the Men's Choir at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church for more 40 years. Many will remember his "'Big Band" orchestra "The Musical Monarch" which played in the Gulf Coast region in the late 1930s and early 1940s. He was also a member of St. George Catholic Church, a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the American Legion. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be considered to Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge, to St. Vincent de Paul Society, to the Alzheimer's Association or to any charity.
