Richard Hitchcock Obituary

Richard Leslie "Dick" Hitchcock

King City

Richard Leslie "Dick" Hitchcock, 84, passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 with his family by his side at his home in King City. He was born on January 18, 1929 in Salinas to Leslie and Helen (née Nissen) Hitchcock.

Raised in his hometown of King City, Dick spent much of his childhood helping his parents with their family business, Hitchcock's Drug Store. He was a graduate of King City High class of 1946, participating and excelling in several sports including football, basketball, and track. Soon after high school, he joined the Navy and was stationed in San Diego from 1948-1952. Dick attended Hartnell College and graduated from San Jose State University with a major in business.

In 1959, Dick married Jeanette Fabretti, and together they settled in King City to raise their family. He was a pest control advisor for Soilserv, which turned into a thirty year career serving the farmers in the Greenfield area. Dick enjoyed spending time outdoors, along with hunting and fishing. In later years, he took up golf as a hobby, waking up in the early morning hours to head out to the "links" with his friends to play nine holes. Cutting wood with his good friend Chet Sarina was a pastime that turned into a passion of Dick's, he would spend hours cutting, splitting and stacking firewood in a manner almost therapeutic. If Dick knew you well enough to give you a nickname, you had a special place in his heart. He had a gift for storytelling, and it never mattered how many times you heard the same story because it was always as funny as hearing it for the first time. The majority of his life was spent in King City, the community that he loved. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, quick wit and fantastic sense of humor.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife of forty-five years, Jeanette. He is survived by his three children, Stanley (Kären), Cheri, and John (Kori), his five beloved grandchildren, Ross, Hanna, Claire, Emilee and Beth, his sister Suzie (Richard) Spates, his sisters-in-law Hilda (Jim) Thorne and Maxine Miller, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He also leaves his dear friends, Chet and Marge Sarina.

A celebration of Dick's life will be held at the DeAnza Building in San Lorenzo County Park in King City on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 from Noon to 4:00.

Memorial donations can be made to Central Coast Visiting Nurse Assn & Hospice, PO Box 2480, Monterey, CA or donor's favorite charity.
