Timothy Paul Spann

Timothy Paul Spann passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2013 in Chicago, IL, after a valiant five-year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Tim was born June 1, 1959 to John R. Spann Sr. and Karol Klauer Spann in Aberdeen, MD. He was the first born of four sons.

Tim attended Henry F. Kammann Elementary School, Washington Middle School, and North Salinas High School where he was senior class president and salutatorian. He was also a talented wrestler. Tim was a California State Scholar and Regents Scholar of the University of California. He received a Bachelors of Science degree with high honors in biology from the University of California, Davis. After college, Tim received a teaching credential in mathematics and life science and taught high school biology for a year in Sunnyvale. Tim then attended the University of California, San Diego and completed a Ph.D. in Biology. During graduate school, Tim reconnected with and married Ananya, a foreign exchange student he met in high school, and their only daughter, Rachel, was born. He became a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Associate and completed a post doctorate in molecular biology at Rice University in Houston, TX. There, he developed a novel technique that led to the identification of 26 genes involved with development. Tim then moved to Chicago and worked as a Research Associate and Research Assistant Professor Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in the department of Cell and Molecular Biology. He published crucial findings regarding the involvement of nuclear lamins in DNA replication and nuclear envelope formation and his publications continue to be referenced by his contemporaries. After 18 years of biological research, Tim returned to school to study law at Chicago-Kent College of Law where he made Dean's List all semesters and was top of his class in International Intellectual Property Law and Personal Income Tax. Afterwards, Tim worked at Cook Alex, a Patent and Copyright law firm, for two years until his illness was diagnosed.

Tim was a great husband, father, son, brother, friend, mentor, and a consummate student. He served on the board of his neighborhood's planning association and coached soccer and basketball. He always had a great sense of loyalty, humor, and a zest for life's adventures. Tim always loved his family, children, animals, traveling, and the outdoors. He made many life long friends.

Tim was preceded in death by his brother, Tom.

He is survived by his wife, Ananya; and daughter, Rachel; mother, Karol Spann; father, John Spann Sr.; brothers, John (Jocelyn) and Dennis (Cindy); and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins whom he dearly loved.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in his honor at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 7, 2013, in Mission San Juan Bautista. A Reception following the Mass will be at the house of Tom Spencer, 2140 Perez St., Salinas.
