Virginia M. Bleicher
Salinas - Virginia Marie Bleicher, nee Redfield, of Salinas died on Sunday, December 27, 2020. She was 90 years old (Born June 6, 1930).
Virginia was a native of Rhinelander, WI and lived in Salinas for 47 years (since 1973). After graduating from Rhinelander High School, she was accepted to the Chicago Conservatory of Music. The sudden, early death of her father prevented her from attending. Due to the early death of her father, it was necessary for her to work her way through college. While attending she worked as a live-in nanny and cook for a family and during the summer worked as a telephone operator. She went on to graduate from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music and Education. While attending the University, she studied opera and sang with the New York City Opera Company in the rendition of the opera Tosca. Upon graduation, she taught in the Milwaukee, WI school system and there met her husband, Philip. After her husband graduated from Dental School, Virginia accompanied him during his 20 + military career (14 moves) and raised their 4 children (all born within 5 years) and was active in the officer's wives clubs. While accompanying her husband during his military career, she taught in the Panama Canal Zone school system. She remained active in music having directed a Youth Choir and participated in various local musical productions and was a member of the Monterey Choraleers. She did volunteer work, serving 25 years as a kitchen worker at the Salinas Steinbeck House. She loved to cook and tend her garden and was an excellent seamstress and milliner. She also enjoyed travel and especially cruising, having visited all but two continents. Her favorite was an annual vacation in Hawaii. She was a fantastic wife and mother to her four children.
Mrs. Bleicher is survived by her husband of 67 years, Philip; four children, Paul (Cyndi), David (Sandra), Beth (Gary), and Lisa; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
