Helen H. Kearney, 93, of Salinas, passed away Friday, Jan. 20, 2017. She was born May 9, 1923 and was a native of Clarinda, Iowa.

She graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Nursing and Hartnell College.

After graduation, she served as an officer in the Army Nurse Corps in World War II.  While stationed in Saipan in the Mariana Islands, she met her future husband, Bill Kearney, who was Athletic Director of the Western Pacific Base Command.

Helen was devoted to her family of two children, husband and friends and spent much of her life doing volunteer work and helping others. She was active in various choral groups including the Senior Singers and the Western Stage. She also served many years on the Salinas Animal Control Committee, the Steinbeck Center, Campfire programs and was the founder of the Salinas Garden Club. It was due to her efforts in working with the Salinas City Council that the present animal shelter was built.

She was an accomplished high board diver, swimmer and scuba diver and enjoyed gardening, folk dancing, reading and foreign travel.

A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 2017, at Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W San Luis St., Salinas, CA 93901.

Helen had requested to please not send flowers, but suggested contributions be sent to the Salinas Animal Shelter, 144 Hitchcock Rd., Salinas, CA 93901.
