Adam M. Wolfel, 23, 126 Beech Road, St. Marys, died suddenly Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, at his home.
He was born Feb. 14, 1991, in St. Marys, a son of Michael and Jane Ritter Wolfel, who survive.
Adam was a graduate of SMAHS, class of 2009. After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps and operated as an 0311 rifleman and 0331 machine gunner. Adam's natural leadership qualities were evident throughout his deployments to Marjah, Afghanistan with 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, Fox Company; and to Okinawa, Japan with 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, India Company. He was honorably discharged in October of 2013 as a decorated Corporal. Following his military service, he was employed by Allegheny Electric Service. In August of 2014, he had enrolled in the Electrical Technology program at Pennsylvania College of Technology where he had just recently finished his first semester.
As a true Elk County native, he was an avid outdoorsman, gun enthusiast, and enjoyed riding his pit bike. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his son Poston.
In addition to his parents, Michael and Jane Ritter Wolfel, Adam is survived by his beloved son, Poston Wolfel, who resides in Emporium with his mother. He is also survived by a sister, Amanda (David) Leuschel; his maternal grandmother, Joan Ritter; his paternal grandparents, Richard and Judy Wolfel; and his paternal great-grandmother, Virginia Herzing, all of St. Marys. He is also survived by the following aunts and uncles: John (Patty) Ritter of Weedville, Cecelia (Mark) Bienkowski of Johnsonburg, Mark (Tina) Ritter of St. Marys, Joyce (William) Walker, of Fairlawn, Ohio, Michael (Shawna) Ritter of St. Marys and Mark (Angie) Funair of St. Marys. Adam is also survived by his girlfriend, Katelynn Nussbaum of Kersey, as well as numerous cousins, friends and Marine brothers.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, John "Jack" Ritter; his paternal great-grandfather, Aurelius "Brod" Herzing and his paternal great-grandmother, Tillie Marie Wolfel.
Visitation will be held from 1-3 and 5-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 2014, in the gymnasium of the Sacred Heart Parish Center, 337 Center Street, St. Marys.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Adam M. Wolfel will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, at Sacred Heart Church, Center Street, St. Marys, with the Rev. Eric Vogt, OSB, officiating.
Interment will be in St. Marys Catholic Cemetery.
Full military honors will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail.
In lieu of flowers, the family strongly recommends that memorial donations be made to a fund for Adam's son, Poston. Memorial donations may also be made to Hidden Wounds, 7001 St. Andrews Road, #323, Columbia, SC 29212, an organization that provides counseling services for veterans suffering combat stress injuries.
