Byrtha L. "Byrt" Smathers, 95, Punxsutawney, died Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Penn Highlands Healthcare, DuBois.
Born Oct. 8, 1918, in Punxsutawney, she was a daughter of the late Olie and Gillen Bastine Amundson.
She married W. William "Bill" Smathers on March 22, 1951. He preceded her in death March 9, 1994.
She was the first manager of the Mahoning Towers for 23 years and retired from there at the age of 83. She managed the YMCA and will be remembered for organizing the YAR dances in the early 70's, and was also an office administrator at Amundson Brothers for 30 years.
She was honored in Washington, D.C., as Pennsylvania's Oldest American Worker.
She will also be remembered for her ceramics and baking, especially her brownies.
She was a member of the First English Lutheran Church.
Surviving relatives include three children: a daughter, Dottie Smathers of Punxsutawney; two sons, Col. William (Libby) Smathers and Olie (Jackie) Smathers all of Punxsutawney; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Lear and Marguerite Williams.
Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 21, 2014, at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.
A private funeral service will be held for the family.
Memorial donations may be made, in memory of Mrs. Smathers, to the First English Lutheran Church of Punxsutawney.
Interment will be in Circle Hill Cemetery, Punxsutawney.
