Dorothy M. Montplaisir, 93, of DuBois, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, at Penn Highlands DuBois.
She was born May 4, 1922, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of the late William and Martha (Huizinga) Niewold.
Dorothy retired from paid employment as an executive secretary and went on to do volunteer work for Meals on Wheels, Light House for the Blind and as a home companion.
She was a devoted member of Ashburn Methodist Church in Chicago, Ill., where she sang in the choir and performed in musical productions with fellow Methodists for many years.
Dorothy was an avid Pinochle player and loved to play competitive card games throughout her life.
While serious about her card playing, she was never too serious to enjoy laughter among family and friends.
After her retirement, her free spirit took her across the world including travels across the US, Europe and North Africa.
After the age of 80, she went on to learn to hike, fish, shoot, take nature photos of birds and plants, and after the age of 90 she began to use an I-pad regularly and to use "google" as a verb. All who knew her saw her remarkable spirit and will to live and learn.
She is survived by her three daughters: Marcia D. Gorski and her husband John of Boonsboro, Md., Gail Montplaisir and her husband Norman K. Smith of Washington, D.C., and Laurel M. Suslow and her husband Gregory R. of DuBois; and a grandson, Ben A. Suslow; a nephew Robert Babbitt; a niece Joan Niewold; three great-nephews: Mark Greenwald, Bill Niewold and Jeff Niewold.
She was preceded in death by her parents, late husband Jerome W. Montplaisir; two brothers, William Niewold and Robert Niewold; and, a sister Alida Niewold Babbitt.
At the wishes of the family all services are private.
