Fred I. Hilliard, 88, a guest at the Jefferson Manor in Brookville, Pa., formerly a resident of almost 40 years of Hazen, Pa., passed away after a brief illness on Friday, June 17, 2016, at Penn Highlands Hospital in DuBois, Pa.
Fred was born on July 27, 1927, in Coolspring, Pa., the son of Ike Hilliard and Myrtle Bish Hilliard.
On Nov. 26, 1947, he married Donna Cattau in Sprankle Mills, Pa. She preceded him in death on Feb. 3, 2014, after 66 years of marriage.
Fred had various employment during his life including being a coal miner, working for Ford Stamping in Buffalo, N.Y., Durey Plastics for 16 years in North Tonawanda, N.Y., and after returning to Brookville, he worked as a diesel mechanic for Brookville Equipment. He retired in 1992 as the road master for Warsaw Township.
Fred, along with his wife, was an avid bingo player and served on the local Warsaw Twp. Vol. Fire Co. Aux.
He loved watching baseball and was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan and loved watching WWE Wrestling.
He was very active in all of the Jefferson Manor activities including church, Bingo, and horse racing, but most of all he and his wife loved and cared for their handicapped granddaughter, Mindy for over 20 years. She passed away in 1999.
Fred is survived by three sons, Fred Allan Hilliard of Elba, N.Y., William L. Hilliard of Olean, N.Y., and Donald L. Hilliard (Karen) of DuBois and Hazen, Pa. During his lifetime he had 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, David Hilliard; one granddaughter, Mindy Hilliard; and nine brothers and sisters.
Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. Monday, June 20, 2016 at the Peterson Funeral Home, 153 Jefferson St. Brookville, PA 15825, and also from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2016, with the service to follow at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Phil Conklin officiating.
Burial will take place at the Beechwoods Cemetery, Washington Twp., Jefferson Co., Pa.
