Rev. George Sturley Cook, 95, journeyed to his heavenly home May 6, 2014.
He was born June 23, 1918, in Homestead.
His wife of 68 years Virginia M. Cupples Cook died Sept. 19, 2007.
George known as Sturley to his family and hometown friends was a member of Homestead Park United Methodist Church where he received his call into the ministry. He began his pastoral ministry at West Homestead United Methodist Church in 1968 where he served part-time and continued as a supervisor at Westinghouse Electric, East Pittsburgh where he worked for 28 years. He went full time in the ministry in 1970 serving the Sinnamahoning Charge, Scenery Hill/Davidson Charge, and Moorhead United Methodist Church in Brockway.
In retirement he served a number of churches on an interim basis.
George was an Army Veteran serving during World War II and was active in Boy Scouts for more than 85 years earning the rank of Eagle Scout and receiving the Silver Beaver Award.
He was a 71-year member of Amity Lodge #582 F&AM, Homestead and Worshipful Master in 1948. He is a 32nd Degree Mason.
He is survived by two sons, James and his wife Karen and their two daughters, Beth Cook and her husband Seth DePasqual of Hancock, Mich., and Amy and her husband Scott Backstrom and their two children, Fischer and Winter; and Dr. Jay Cook and his wife Mary Beth and their son Joshua and his daughter Emily and their daughter Miriam.
A family greeting will be held at 10 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21 at Moorhead United Methodist Church in Brockway with the Rev. Robert Trask officiating. Burial will follow in the Wildwood Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be given in Rev. Cook's name to Moorhead United Methodist Church, PO Box 233, Brockway, PA 15824; or to the Local Boy Scout Council.
The family is thankful for the care given by Masonicare in Wallingford, Conn.; and for all your prayers this past month.
