The Rev. Howard Clinton Varner, 86, of Wheeling, W.Va., was called home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Dec. 4, 2014.
Born on Oct. 20, 1928, in DuBois, Pa., the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Howard C. Varner, he was a graduate of DuBois High School, a seven year Veteran of the U.S. Air Force, when he received his "Call" into Ministry.
He graduated from the College of Emporia, Emporia, Kan., with a bachelor's degree, and from the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Pittsburgh, Pa., with a Master of Divinity Degree.
Rev. Varner, a member of the Upper Ohio Valley Presbytery, faithfully served over 50 years of pastorates at Presbyterian Churches in Oregon and Milan, Mo.; Zanesville, Ohio; retired from First Presbyterian Church in Wheeling after 15 years, where he was honored with being elected as Pastor Emeritus; and then served Wheeling's Third Presbyterian Church for nine years, retiring for a second time.
He is survived by his loving wife Ann of 53 years of marriage, his daughter, Sharon Winefordner and her husband, Dean, of Charleston, W.Va.; his son, Jay Varner and wife, Patty; and granddaughter, Katherine Ann of Atlanta, Ga.; his brother, Dr. James Varner and wife, Linda, of Hornell, N.Y.; his sister-in-law, Margaret Heitzenrater of Williamsport, Pa.; and his brother-in-law, Paul Heitzenrater and wife, Mildred, of Centennial, Col..
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Varner, formerly of DuBois, Pa.; and his brother-in-law, Samuel Heitzenrater, formerly of Williamsport, Pa.
