United States Marine Corps Major John Carrier Cummings, age 96, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at the Penn Highlands Brookville Hospital.
He was born in DuBois, Pa., on Nov. 29, 1920, to the late Charles Edgar and Harriet Elizabeth (Carrier) Cummings. John married Eleanor Jane Reister on June 2, 1946; she preceded in him passing on July 28, 1982.
John attended Penn State University and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of DuBois, and later a member of the Brookville Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Brookville Lion's Club. He enjoyed reading, gardening, hunting, and meeting with his friends for coffee in the mornings. John was an avid fan of Penn State, the Pirates, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He is survived by two daughters, Susan C. (Hugh) Durham of Yuma, Ariz., Sally S. (Leonard) Klein of Northbrook, Ill.; two grandsons; and one great-grandson.
In addition to his wife and parents, John is preceded in death by three sisters: Nancy Jane Rogers, Frances DeMott, and Harriet Cummings.
John was a member of the greatest generation and served in the South Pacific as a Marine Aviation Officer on Midway Island. After leaving the Marine Corps in 1956, he remained true to the Corps; Once a Marine, always a Marine.
Funeral services for John will remain private to his family with interment taking place at Morningside Cemetery, DuBois, Clearfield County, Pa.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Brookville Presbyterian Church, corner of White and Main Street, in Brookville.
